Our verdict

Third of our top three SEO browser extensions

For: Writers who want keyword volumes while they search

Keyword Surfer is free from Surfer and puts a query's search volume and cost per click beside Google's results, with keyword ideas, traffic and word-count estimates for the ranking pages, CSV collections and data for 70 countries. It is third because it does one part of the job: there are no page checks for titles, headings or schema, and no keyword database to search away from Google. It runs only in Chrome and other Chromium browsers, and the store listing says it handles location, user activity and website content data.

Best for search volumes beside Google results

Keyword Surfer puts a search's volume, cost per click and related keywords beside Google's results, with traffic and word-count estimates for the pages that rank, in 70 countries, for free. It only works on the Google results page, with no keyword database to search on its own, and only in Chrome and other Chromium browsers.

Who Keyword Surfer is for

  • Fits if you want a keyword's volume while you're searching Google anyway
  • Works for writers gathering related keywords into a list before drafting

Who Keyword Surfer is not for

  • Skip it if you use Firefox or Safari, as it's Chrome and Chromium browsers only
  • Too light for keyword research away from Google, since there's no database to search on its own
  • Not for you if you want page checks like titles, headings or schema, which it doesn't do
  • Watch out: the store listing says it handles location, user activity and website content data

Why Keyword Surfer gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyFree from Surfer, whose page calls it 100% free with no paid tier for the extension. Surfer's paid content tools are a separate product.
  • AFree plan and trialFree outright: volumes, cost per click, keyword ideas, page estimates and saved collections, with nothing locked behind a plan.
  • CFeaturesVolume and cost per click for the query, keyword ideas with overlap scores, traffic and word-count estimates for ranking pages, CSV collections and 70 countries. It does keyword numbers on Google fully, a smaller job, with no page checks and no database of its own.
  • BEase of useNo rating on record, but there's nothing to set up: install it and the panel appears beside your next Google search.
  • CPlatforms and integrationsChrome and other Chromium browsers only, so computers only, with no Firefox or Safari version. It runs on Google Search and in ChatGPT, and links to Surfer.

Keep Keyword Surfer, or make your own?

Keep it

Keyword Surfer is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.

What you could not

  • Search volumes for millions of keywords, gathered and kept up to date.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.

What this rests on. Keyword Surfer’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
