Best for spotting nofollow links on a page

NoFollow outlines links marked nofollow, ugc or sponsored on any page, and an info box shows the robots meta tags a page sets for Googlebot, Bingbot and other crawlers, for free. It's one narrow job: ugc and sponsored links get the same outline as nofollow, and it marks links in place rather than listing them in a report.

Who NoFollow is for

  • Fits if you need to know whether links on a page pass on ranking credit
  • Works for link builders confirming that a placed link isn't nofollow

Who NoFollow is not for

  • Watch out: ugc and sponsored links get the same outline as nofollow, so you can't tell them apart
  • Too light for audits, as it marks links on the page you're viewing and doesn't list or crawl them
  • Skip it if you're on Safari, which IgorWare doesn't support until further notice
  • Watch out: the developer hasn't identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights don't apply

Why NoFollow gets a 2.8

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyFree, with no paid version anywhere on IgorWare's site.
  • AFree plan and trialFree outright: link outlines, the robots meta tag box, site filters and custom CSS styles, with nothing to upgrade to.
  • DFeaturesOne narrow function: outlines for nofollow, ugc, sponsored, followed and external links, Yandex noindex tags and a robots meta info box. The three rel values share one style, and there's no report of the links.
  • BEase of useNo rating on record, but nothing to set up: install it and outlines appear on the next page, with styles you can change later.
  • CPlatforms and integrationsA browser extension for computers only, with no phone version and no integrations. IgorWare says its Safari version isn't supported until further notice.

Keep NoFollow, or make your own?

Keep it

NoFollow is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces. That makes this kind of software worth paying for, not this one in particular: 18 of the 34 other SEO browser extensions grade higher.

What you could not

  • An index of the links between billions of web pages.
  • A crawler that checks every page of a site.

What this rests on. NoFollow’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is NoFollow?

NoFollow is a free Chrome and Edge extension by IgorWare, the one-person software shop of Igor Jerosimić, that outlines links marked nofollow, ugc or sponsored on any page you visit. It can also mark followed and external links, and an info box shows the robots meta tags a page sets for Googlebot, Bingbot, Applebot and other crawlers. Outline styles are written in CSS and can be changed.

Worth knowing

  • Only Chrome and Edge are supported; IgorWare says its Safari version is not supported until further notice.
  • UGC and sponsored links get the same outline as nofollow links, as its changelog notes.
  • It outlines links in place on the page you are viewing rather than crawling a site or listing links in a report.
  • The developer has not identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights do not apply, as the store listing notes.
