Our verdict

Second of our top three SEO browser extensions

For: People on Firefox or Edge who want on-page checks

Sprout SEO is free in Chrome, Firefox and Edge, with no paid version. One panel covers indexability, canonicals, headings, links with their status, images missing alt text, JSON-LD, hreflang and a Core Web Vitals snapshot, and on Google results it adds Trends data, a People Also Ask export and a location simulator. It is second because it has no traffic, ranking or backlink figures of its own and links out to Ahrefs and Semrush for those. It checks one page at a time, and the Wayback exporter stops at about 100,000 URLs per domain.

3.0GPA

Very good · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 23, 2026

Best for on-page checks plus a Google results sidebar

Sprout SEO opens a panel of on-page checks, indexability, canonicals, headings, links, images, schema, hreflang and a Core Web Vitals snapshot, and adds Trends data, People Also Ask and a location simulator to Google results, for free. It has no ranking or backlink data of its own, so it links out to Ahrefs and Semrush for that, and it checks one page at a time.

Who Sprout SEO is for

  • Fits if you run quick on-page checks on client pages and want them in one panel
  • Works for exporting a page's headings and copy for a content brief

Who Sprout SEO is not for

  • Skip it if you want rankings or backlinks, as it links out to Ahrefs and Semrush for those
  • Too light for whole-site audits, since it checks one page at a time
  • Not for you if you browse in Safari, as only Chrome, Firefox and Edge are named
  • Tight if you're mapping a big migration, as the Wayback exporter stops at about 100,000 URLs
  • Watch out: the developer hasn't identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights don't apply

Keep Sprout SEO, or make your own?

Keep it

Sprout SEO is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

And it is not the kind of software a weekend replaces.

What you could make

  • Schema markup: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • A crawler that checks every page of a site.
  • Speed tests run from real browsers on a schedule.
  • It plugs into other products, Google Search Console, PageSpeed Insights and Google Trends among them.

What this rests on. Sprout SEO’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.

What is Sprout SEO?

Sprout SEO is a free browser extension that opens a panel of on-page checks for the page you are on: titles and descriptions, indexability, canonicals, headings, hreflang, links, images, schema, redirects and a Core Web Vitals snapshot. On Google results pages it adds a sidebar with Google Trends data, a People Also Ask extractor and a local search simulator. It is made by User Growth, a marketing agency in Belgium.

Worth knowing

  • It checks one page at a time and has no ranking or backlink data of its own; it links out to tools such as Ahrefs and Semrush for that.
  • It runs in Chrome, Firefox and Edge; the vendor names no Safari version.
  • The Chrome Web Store notes the developer has not identified itself as a trader, so EU consumer rights do not apply.
  • The Wayback exporter stops at about 100,000 URLs per domain.

Key features

Indexability and canonicals
Summarizes robots.txt status, meta robots and X-Robots-Tag headers, and flags a canonical that does not point back to the current URL.
Headings, links and images
Maps H1 to H6 with warnings, lists links with their HTTP status and anchor text, and groups images missing alt text or dimensions, all exportable to CSV.
Schema and hreflang checks
Detects JSON-LD types, exports each one and links to Google's Rich Results Test; the hreflang view checks each alternate's status and back-reference.
Core Web Vitals snapshot
Shows LCP, INP and CLS from Chrome user data with color cues, with a link to PageSpeed Insights for a fuller view.
Google results sidebar
Adds Google Trends data, keyword ideas, a People Also Ask extractor that exports to CSV and a simulator for searching from any location.
Wayback URL exporter
Pulls up to about 100,000 of a domain's URLs from archive.org within a date range, for mapping redirects after a site migration.
