Value for money
BMember is $10 a month or $96 a year, about typical for a writing tool. Pro is $14 a month or $144 a year, and Lifetime Pro is a steep $599 once. Monthly plans and Lifetime Pro can't be refunded. Yearly plans can, within 15 days.
CWriter is $19 a month, with 20% off if you pay annually, when paid writing tools typically start around $10. Comments, track changes and the grammar checks need Author at $29. Lifetime Author is $699, which Dabble puts at about two years of Author.
Free plan and trial
BFree has no time limit and needs no card, and it covers the core game. The limits are 25 files, 2 projects, 25 battles a day and one month of file versions. Streak saving and sharing files with collaborators are left out.
CNo free plan. You get a 14-day free trial with no credit card. After that, without a subscription your projects stay viewable and exportable but turn read-only.
Features
BBattles come in solo, endurance and co-op modes, with teams of 2 to 8 writers. Write 444 words in a day and your streak grows. The cloud editor has projects, version history, goals with charts and export to Word, Markdown or HTML. Solid. But sharing is paid, and capped at 2 collaborators on Member.
AA Plot Grid for mapping plot lines against scenes, story notes for characters and worldbuilding that carry across a series, daily word-count goals, focus mode and versioning. Co-authors write in the same manuscript in real time. Editing tools start on Author.
Ease of use
BNo App Store rating on record, as it's a web app. Pick a monster, write the words before the timer runs out, collect the loot. If you've played any game with quests, you'll get it.
BThere's no App Store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. Scenes and chapters are numbered and formatted for you and reordered by drag and drop, and the trial starts without a card.
Platforms and integrations
BA web app plus a free Chrome extension that counts words typed in Google Docs, Notion, Substack, WordPress, Medium and Overleaf. There's no App Store download, and the extension is tested and supported on desktop Chrome only.
BWeb, plus desktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux, with ProWritingAid and Google Docs connected. On phones and tablets it's a web app you add to the home screen. It isn't in the App Store or Google Play.

Key features

4thewords

Writing battles
Pick a monster and write the required number of words before the timer runs out. There are solo, endurance and co-op modes, with co-op teams of 2 to 8 writers.
Streaks and daily challenges
Writing 444 or more words in a day extends a streak that earns rewards over time. Paid plans can repair missed days or reserve future ones.
Built-in writing editor
A cloud editor groups files into projects, saves automatically, keeps a version history and exports to Word, text, Markdown or HTML.
Writing goals and stats
Word-count targets with deadlines can be set for a single file, a project or the whole account, with charts to track progress.
Chrome extension
A free extension counts the words typed on other sites, such as Google Docs, Notion and Substack, and applies them to battles, streaks and quests.
Sharing and co-writing
On paid plans a file or a whole project can be shared with friends as editors or viewers, who can write in it together in real time.

Dabble

Plot Grid
Lays out plot lines and plot points against scenes so a story's structure can be planned as fully or as loosely as wanted, with the editor open alongside the plan.
Story notes and characters
Keeps character profiles, worldbuilding details and research beside the manuscript, and can share characters, locations and lore across the books in a series.
Manuscript editor and goals
Scenes and chapters are numbered and formatted automatically and reordered by drag and drop, with focus mode, daily word-count goals, stats and a writing timer.
Editing tools
Comments, sticky notes, highlighting, track changes and Read-to-Me, plus grammar and style checks powered by ProWritingAid. These start on the Author plan.
Co-authoring
Invited co-authors work on the same manuscript in real time. Writer allows 5 collaborators per project; Author, Bestseller and lifetime plans allow 100.
Offline-first sync
Every edit saves to the device first and syncs to the account once a connection is available, so writing continues offline on any installed copy.
