Value for money
BMost of it is free, so paying is optional. What's sold is hosting: a private multi-user instance at $50 a month, or $99 with priority resources. Fair for a small team, steep for one person, and you still bring your own LLM API key. You can self-host the same thing with Docker for nothing.
AIt costs nothing. PyGPT is free and open source under the MIT license, with no paid plan to be sold up to. What you do pay for is cloud model use, billed by each provider on your own API key. Local models through Ollama add no cost.
Free plan and trial
AThe desktop app is free for personal and commercial use, with no account. The multi-user version is MIT-licensed and free to self-host with Docker. The only free limits are daily allowances on its Magic tools, such as dictation and autocomplete.
AThe whole app is free: agents, document indexing, plugins, MCP connectors and every work mode. There's no paid tier, so nothing is held back for one.
Features
AChat with your documents, on local models or cloud ones. Agents that search the web, read and write local files and run recurring jobs. A Meeting Assistant that transcribes and summarises on your computer with no bot in the call, plus system-wide dictation and autocomplete.
AAgents work alone, under an orchestrator or as a swarm. LlamaIndex indexes your files, web pages and past chats. Models can run Python and system commands in a sandbox, call MCP servers and search the web. Then there's realtime voice, vision, and image and video generation.
Ease of use
BThe desktop app recommends a local model to suit your hardware and needs no API key or account, so it's install and go. No rating on record, so a B at best. The team version is another story: that's Docker, or paying for the hosted one.
CThis one's for technical people. Cloud models need your own API keys, local ones need Ollama installed separately, and the Mac has no prebuilt app: you install it from PyPI with Python, or run it from source. There's no rating on record to go by.
Platforms and integrations
BMac, Windows and Linux, plus an Android app that runs small models on the phone. It connects to OpenAI, Anthropic, Ollama, LM Studio, OpenRouter and AWS Bedrock. But there's no iPhone app, and the Magic features are Windows and macOS only.
BWindows, Linux and Mac, on the desktop only. It connects to OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Ollama, GitHub, Slack and Telegram, and to MCP servers. There's no phone app and no web version.

Who each one suits

AnythingLLM

  • Chatting with private documents without sending them to a cloud service
  • Teams that want a self-hosted, multi-user AI workspace
  • Meeting transcripts and summaries produced on the device

PyGPT

  • Technical users who want one desktop app for many model providers
  • Running agents that can execute Python and work with local files
  • Pairing a chat interface with local Ollama models at no cost

Worth knowing

AnythingLLM

  • The hosted cloud has no built-in LLM and does not support custom agents or MCP; you connect your own model provider.
  • Magic Echo, Beacon and Tab have daily free limits. The Pro subscription that removes them is priced on a checkout page that could not be read.
  • Magic features and AnythingLLM Pro work on Windows and macOS only, and the mobile app is for Android only.
  • Hosted cloud instances have no GPU, and the docs warn that embedding very large documents can crash an instance on the lower tier.

PyGPT

  • Cloud models need your own API keys, and each provider charges for usage separately.
  • macOS has no prebuilt app: it is installed from PyPI with Python 3.10 to 3.13, or run from source.
  • Local models are not built in; they run through a separate Ollama installation and need compatible hardware.
  • It is a desktop application only, for Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit Linux and macOS.

Key features

AnythingLLM

Chat with your documents
Documents you add become part of the assistant's knowledge base. In the desktop app they are processed on the device and no data leaves it.
Local or cloud models
Recommends a local model to suit your hardware and needs no API key, and can also connect cloud providers such as OpenAI and Anthropic.
Agents and custom skills
Agents can search and scrape the web, read, write and search local files, run recurring background jobs and use custom agent skills.
Meeting Assistant
Transcribes and summarizes meetings on your own computer, producing action items, key decisions and a full transcript with no bot joining the call.
Magic Echo, Beacon and Tab
System-wide dictation, questions about highlighted text and autocomplete on Windows and macOS. Each has a daily free allowance that an AnythingLLM Pro subscription removes.
Multi-user deployment
The Docker and hosted cloud versions serve several users on one server with isolated tenants, fine-grained admin controls and white-label branding.

PyGPT

Cloud and local models
Works with OpenAI, Claude, Gemini, Grok, DeepSeek, Perplexity Sonar and Hugging Face models through your own API keys, and with local models such as Llama, Qwen or Mistral served by Ollama.
Multi-agent workflows
Agents run as a primary agent, an orchestrator or a swarm of workers. Portable SKILL.md skills can be imported from GitHub or disk, and AGENTS.md files add project-specific instructions.
RAG and conversation memory
LlamaIndex indexes files, web pages, images, audio, video and past conversations into built-in vector stores, with a separate index per project and short- and long-term memory.
Python, system tools and MCP
Models can run Python, IPython and system commands in a built-in sandbox or Docker, call MCP servers through a Connectors manager, search the web and run scheduled tasks.
Voice, vision and generation
Realtime voice, speech recognition and speech synthesis through several providers, analysis of images and camera input, and image and video generation with models such as Imagen, Veo and Sora.
Profiles and built-in tools
Profiles keep separate settings, history and files. The workspace includes a notepad, a painter, a calendar with day notes, a web browser, presets, plugins and themes.
