How we grade them

2.8GPAFoxit PDF EditorGood2.2GPAXodoFair
Value for money
C$129.99 a year for PDF Editor, the plan that edits text on Windows, Mac and web. That's the dear end of normal for PDF editors, not a bargain. Spread over three years, the $209.99 perpetual license works out cheaper, but still middling.
CXodo Web is $7.99 a month on a yearly plan and the desktop editor $9.99, both normal for PDF editors. The full Suite is $14.99, or $8.99 for new yearly subscribers until Dec 31, 2026. The $240 perpetual license, spread over three years, is middling too.
Free plan and trial
CNo free plan. There's a 14-day trial of PDF Editor+ with no card needed, which is plenty of time to see if it suits you. After that you pay or stop.
CThere's a free plan, but it's 1 action a day on the web tools, barely a taste. The 3-day trial needs a payment method, and Xodo doesn't give refunds.
Features
BEdits text and images, converts to and from Office, OCRs scans, builds forms with JavaScript, redacts, compares versions and adds Bates numbers. It covers the whole job. Smart Redact and the phone apps wait for PDF Editor+, and heavy AI use costs extra.
CEdits, compresses, redacts, OCRs, converts, compares two PDFs, checks PDF/A and even edits Word files, with AskPDF AI. A good spread. But no form builder is on record, and the web plan has no desktop app.
Ease of use
B4.5 from 4,763 App Store ratings for the Foxit PDF Editor app. On a computer it's an editor you install and start using, with nothing to set up first.
C4.35 from 1,703 App Store ratings, below most PDF apps here. And working out which of the separate products you need takes some reading first.
Platforms and integrations
AWindows, Mac, web, iPhone and Android, with Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Google Drive, Dropbox, Box and Salesforce. Just note the phone apps come with PDF Editor+, not the base plan.
BWeb, Windows, Mac, Linux, iPhone and Android, as wide as it gets. But the only integration on record is Xodo Sign, so it stops at B.

Who each one suits

Foxit PDF Editor

  • Offices replacing Adobe Acrobat on Windows and Mac machines
  • Buyers who prefer to pay once: a perpetual license is still sold
  • Teams that also send documents for signature through Foxit eSign

Xodo

  • Linux users who need a full desktop PDF editor
  • Buyers who want a perpetual desktop license instead of a subscription
  • People who only need browser-based PDF tools at a low yearly price

Worth knowing

Foxit PDF Editor

  • The iOS and Android apps, AI Smart Redact and the 150 eSign envelopes a year come only with PDF Editor+; PDF Editor covers Windows, macOS and web.
  • Both subscriptions are annual; the $10.99 and $13.99 monthly figures are an annual plan billed monthly, not a monthly plan.
  • More AI use costs extra: the AI Assistant add-on is $49.99 a year for 2,000 credits a month and access to Foxit Workspace.
  • Unlimited e-signature sending needs Foxit eSign, a separate product sold per user by the year.

Xodo

  • Each product is sold separately: the Web plan has no desktop app, and only the Document Suite covers web, desktop and mobile.
  • The free plan allows only 1 action a day, and the free trial needs a payment method.
  • Xodo does not give refunds; a cancelled plan runs to the end of the paid period.
  • The perpetual license includes only 12 months of version upgrades and covers two devices.
