How we grade them

4.0GPABitwardenExcellent3.4GPAEnpassVery good
Value for money
APremium is $1.65 a month, billed as $19.80 a year. That's a little over half the $2.99 or so that password managers typically start at. Families covers up to 6 people for $3.99 a month.
APremium is $23.99 a year on the US App Store, so $2 a month where password managers typically start at about $2.99. Three years for one $47.99 payment is cheaper still. Lifetime is $99.99 on the Mac App Store.
Free plan and trial
AFree for good, with unlimited logins, passkeys, notes and cards on unlimited devices. Most people could stay here. What you don't get is file attachments, the built-in authenticator and emergency access.
BFree covers 25 items in one vault, with syncing across all platforms. That's tight. Go over and the extra items stay visible, but you can't edit, copy or autofill them.
Features
APasswords, passkeys, autofill, a password and username generator, and Send, which shares a secret by a link that disappears. Premium adds two-factor codes and 5 GB of encrypted attachments. You can even run it on your own server.
AAutofill for passwords, passkeys, cards and forms, a built-in authenticator for two-factor codes, a security score with breach alerts, and separate vaults for personal, work and shared logins on Premium. Custom templates and file attachments too.
Ease of use
A4.8 from about 33,500 App Store ratings. Sign up free and your logins fill in across your devices. Running your own server is optional, and most people will never go near it.
C4.2 from about 1,300 App Store ratings, which is on the low side. Syncing also takes some setting up: Enpass doesn't host vaults, so you connect your own cloud account or arrange Wi-Fi sync.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension. Business plans add directory sync, SCIM and single sign-on. No common device is left out.
AMac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and browser extensions. Vaults sync through iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Nextcloud or WebDAV, and businesses can keep theirs in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.

Who each one suits

Bitwarden

  • People who want a free password manager on unlimited devices
  • Users who prefer open-source software or want to self-host
  • Organizations that want per-user pricing with SSO and SCIM available

Enpass

  • People who want their vault in their own cloud account, not on a vendor's servers
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time purchase to a yearly subscription
  • Linux users who want a native desktop app alongside the mobile apps

Worth knowing

Bitwarden

  • The free plan leaves out file attachments, the integrated authenticator, vault health reports and emergency access.
  • Individual plans share items with only one other Bitwarden user; unlimited sharing starts with Families.
  • Listed prices are based on annual subscriptions, and taxes are not included.
  • SSO integration and enterprise policies require the Enterprise plan.

Enpass

  • The Free plan stops at 25 active items; further items stay visible but cannot be edited, copied or used for autofill.
  • Prices here are the US App Store's in-app prices. Enpass also sells plans, including Business, on its website, where prices may differ.
  • Syncing relies on a cloud account you supply or on Wi-Fi sync you set up yourself, because Enpass does not host vaults.
  • Email support is listed for paid users; free users rely on the documentation and the user forums.

Key features

Bitwarden

Unlimited free vault
The free plan stores unlimited logins, passkeys, notes, cards and identities and works on unlimited devices through browser, mobile and desktop apps.
Open source
Bitwarden's code is open source, and the company describes its security as independently verified.
Passkeys, autofill and generator
Stores and manages passkeys alongside passwords, autofills logins across devices and generates strong passwords and usernames.
Bitwarden Send
Shares sensitive information through a link that disappears. Free accounts can send text only; file sharing comes with paid plans.
Self-hosting
Bitwarden can be deployed on premises or in a private cloud. Families and Enterprise organizations can be moved to a self-hosted server.
Business controls
Teams adds event logs, directory synchronization and SCIM provisioning. Enterprise adds policies, SSO integration and granular access control.

Enpass

Vaults in your own cloud
Encrypted vaults sync through your own iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Nextcloud or WebDAV account, or stay offline and sync over Wi-Fi. Enpass says it never holds vault data.
Autofill and password generator
Fills passwords, passkeys, authentication codes, credit cards and web forms, saves new and changed credentials, and generates random or pronounceable passwords.
Passkeys and built-in authenticator
Creates, stores and syncs passkeys inside the vault and generates TOTP codes, so a separate authenticator app is not needed.
Security audit and breach alerts
A dashboard shows a password security score, highlights weak, compromised and duplicate passwords, and alerts you when a credential appears in a known breach.
Multiple vaults and custom items
Premium allows unlimited separate vaults, for example personal, work and shared ones, plus customizable templates, categories, tags, fields and file attachments.
Business admin console
Organizations keep vaults in their own Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and get policy enforcement, SCIM provisioning, SSO integration and audit logs.
