How we grade them

3.4GPAEnpassVery good3.4GPAKeePassVery good
Value for money
APremium is $23.99 a year on the US App Store, so $2 a month where password managers typically start at about $2.99. Three years for one $47.99 payment is cheaper still. Lifetime is $99.99 on the Mac App Store.
AFree and open source under the GPL, for personal and company use alike, with no fees. Paid password managers typically start at about $2.99 a month. The author takes donations.
Free plan and trial
BFree covers 25 items in one vault, with syncing across all platforms. That's tight. Go over and the extra items stay visible, but you can't edit, copy or autofill them.
AEverything is free: both editions, the installer, the portable ZIP and the full source code. There's no paid tier and no account to make.
Features
AAutofill for passwords, passkeys, cards and forms, a built-in authenticator for two-factor codes, a security score with breach alerts, and separate vaults for personal, work and shared logins on Premium. Custom templates and file attachments too.
BOne database encrypted with AES-256 or ChaCha20, opened by a master password, a key file or both. Auto-Type fills logins in, and it imports more than 35 formats. But Windows Hello unlock and one-time codes lean on third-party plugins.
Ease of use
C4.2 from about 1,300 App Store ratings, which is on the low side. Syncing also takes some setting up: Enpass doesn't host vaults, so you connect your own cloud account or arrange Wi-Fi sync.
BNo App Store rating on record, so B is as high as we go. On Windows it runs without even being installed. The work starts with a second device, because you keep copies of the database in step yourself.
Platforms and integrations
AMac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and browser extensions. Vaults sync through iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Nextcloud or WebDAV, and businesses can keep theirs in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace.
BWindows, plus Linux and macOS through Mono for version 2.x. The Android and iOS apps are unofficial ports by other people. No hosted sync and no listed integrations, though plugins add a lot.

Who each one suits

Enpass

  • People who want their vault in their own cloud account, not on a vendor's servers
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time purchase to a yearly subscription
  • Linux users who want a native desktop app alongside the mobile apps

KeePass

  • Windows users who want a free password manager that needs no account
  • People who carry their password database on a USB stick
  • Technical users who want to extend a password manager with plugins

Worth knowing

Enpass

  • The Free plan stops at 25 active items; further items stay visible but cannot be edited, copied or used for autofill.
  • Prices here are the US App Store's in-app prices. Enpass also sells plans, including Business, on its website, where prices may differ.
  • Syncing relies on a cloud account you supply or on Wi-Fi sync you set up yourself, because Enpass does not host vaults.
  • Email support is listed for paid users; free users rely on the documentation and the user forums.

KeePass

  • The official program is built for Windows. On Linux and macOS it runs through Mono, and the Android and iOS apps are unofficial contributed ports.
  • There is no hosted sync service: you keep copies of the database in step yourself, for example through a cloud-storage folder.
  • Extras such as Windows Hello unlock, one-time-password keys and additional ciphers rely on third-party plugins.
  • KeePass 1.x is in maintenance only; the site says to use 2.x if in doubt.

Key features

Enpass

Vaults in your own cloud
Encrypted vaults sync through your own iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, Nextcloud or WebDAV account, or stay offline and sync over Wi-Fi. Enpass says it never holds vault data.
Autofill and password generator
Fills passwords, passkeys, authentication codes, credit cards and web forms, saves new and changed credentials, and generates random or pronounceable passwords.
Passkeys and built-in authenticator
Creates, stores and syncs passkeys inside the vault and generates TOTP codes, so a separate authenticator app is not needed.
Security audit and breach alerts
A dashboard shows a password security score, highlights weak, compromised and duplicate passwords, and alerts you when a credential appears in a known breach.
Multiple vaults and custom items
Premium allows unlimited separate vaults, for example personal, work and shared ones, plus customizable templates, categories, tags, fields and file attachments.
Business admin console
Organizations keep vaults in their own Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and get policy enforcement, SCIM provisioning, SSO integration and audit logs.

KeePass

Encrypted database file
All entries live in one database file encrypted with AES-256 or ChaCha20. The complete database is encrypted, including user names and notes, not only the passwords.
Master password, key file or both
A database opens with a master password, a key file or the two combined. KeePass 2.x can also lock a database to the current Windows user account.
Auto-Type
Types an entry's details into dialogs and web forms with a customizable sequence, and a global hot key finds the matching entry while KeePass runs in the background.
Portable
Runs from a USB stick without being installed, creates no registry keys and keeps its settings inside its own directory.
Plugins
A plugin architecture lets other developers add functions such as extra import and export formats, more encryption algorithms and additional key sources.
Synchronization and import
KeePass 2.x merges changes made in several copies of a database, including files reached over FTP, HTTP or WebDAV, and imports more than 35 formats out of the box.
