Value for money
B$39.99 a year covers every device you own, and there's a pay-once Forever plan listed at $199. Fair, not cheap. ScreenZen is free and one sec is $19.99 a year. Monthly is $8.99, so go yearly if you pay at all.
AJomo Plus is $29.99 a year, which works out at $2.49 a month, less than most focus apps charge. Or pay $99.99 once and share it with up to 5 family members. Students get the year for $14.99. Paying monthly is the dear way, at $5.99.
Free plan and trial
BFree blocks sites, apps or the whole internet on as many devices as you like. But sessions stop at 2 hours and you have to start each one by hand. Scheduling and Locked Mode are paid.
BThe Free Plan gives you 1 Session, 1 Action or Limit and 1 Screen Time Budget, plus Squads and Reports. Enough to try the idea, tight to live on. The 3-day trial is on the annual plan only, offered once during onboarding.
Features
ABlocks websites, apps or the entire internet, on several devices in one session. There are ready-made blocklists, an allow-only mode on Mac and Windows, schedules, Locked Mode and focus sounds.
ASessions block apps for a duration or a time range, Limits after a set amount of use, and Actions until you do something first. Unlocking can mean a wait, a typed reason or a QR code. Plus adds Strict Mode, and the Mac app blocks apps, websites and keywords.
Ease of use
B4.4 from about 5,900 App Store ratings. Starting a session takes a few taps. iPhone is the fiddly one, with Screen Time permissions to grant, and reviewers say scheduled sessions sometimes wait until you open the app.
A4.8 from about 2,500 App Store ratings. On the Mac it works in all browsers with no extension to install, except for Firefox.
Platforms and integrations
AMac, Windows, iPhone, iPad and Android apps, and one session can cover all of them. Chromebook and Linux get a browser extension that blocks websites only. There's no API, and it doesn't hook into other apps.
CiPhone, iPad and Mac, with Apple Health and Shortcuts. All Apple, though. Jomo's pages list no Android or Windows version.

Who each one suits

Freedom

  • People who want one blocking session to cover a computer and a phone together
  • Cutting off the whole internet, not only selected sites, for a set period
  • Buyers who would rather pay once for lifetime access than subscribe

Jomo

  • iPhone and Mac users who want the same blocking rules on both
  • People who want apps unlocked only after a wait, a reason or a walk
  • Students: the annual plan is half price with a student ID
  • Buyers who would rather pay once than subscribe

Worth knowing

Freedom

  • Free accounts are limited to Start Now sessions of up to 2 hours; scheduling, recurring sessions and Locked Mode need Premium.
  • Linux and Chromebook are supported through the browser extension only, and app blocking is not available on Chromebook.
  • Website exceptions, which allow only the sites you list, work on Mac and Windows only.

Jomo

  • Apple devices only: iPhone, iPad and Mac. Jomo's pages list no Android or Windows version.
  • The free plan allows 1 Session, 1 Action or Limit and 1 Screen Time Budget.
  • Strict Mode, the Apple Health integration and multiple Screen Time Budgets need Jomo Plus.
  • The help center says only the lifetime plan can be shared with family, yet the US App Store also lists Jomo Plus Family at $11.99 a month and $59.99 a year.

Key features

Freedom

Website, app and internet blocking
A session can block chosen websites, chosen apps or all internet access. App blocking covers Mac, Windows, iOS and Android but not Chromebook.
Preset and custom blocklists
Start from a preset list of distracting sites and apps or build your own. On Mac and Windows a list can also work in reverse, allowing only the sites you name.
Sessions across devices
One session can include several devices at once, such as a laptop and a phone. Every plan, including Free, allows unlimited devices.
Scheduled and recurring sessions
Premium lets sessions start automatically at a set time and repeat on a schedule. Free accounts can only start a session immediately.
Locked Mode
A Premium setting that prevents a session from being ended before its timer runs out.
Focus sounds
Background audio for a session, with a choice of music and ambient recordings such as cafes, libraries and nature.

Jomo

Sessions
Block chosen apps for a set duration or inside a time range, such as an hour of deep work or 9 PM to 6 AM, at a blocking strength you pick.
Limits and Actions
A Limit blocks apps after a set amount of use, such as 10 minutes. An Action keeps them blocked until you do something first, such as walking 5,000 steps.
Unlocks
Opening a blocked app can require waiting a few seconds, giving a reason, copying out a text, entering a password, scanning a QR code or showing proof.
Strict Mode
Makes rules impossible to delete or bypass, for a set time, while blocking, within a time range or always. It is part of Jomo Plus.
Journaling and reports
After a session you record whether the app was worth the time, and reports show usage patterns so you can decide what to block.
Mac app
Blocks apps, websites and keywords on the Mac in all browsers, with no extension needed except for Firefox. Focus Filters switch on the same rules on iPhone and Mac together.
