Best for background noise on a Linux desktop

On Linux and want rain or a coffee shop murmuring away while you work? Blanket does exactly that, for free: mix a few sounds, save the mix, and it keeps playing after you close the window. It's small, with 14 sounds built in, and it only runs on Linux.

Who Blanket is for

  • Great if you work on Linux and want rain or café noise without keeping a browser tab open
  • Handy when you have your own recordings, since you can add them next to the stock sounds
  • Good for falling asleep somewhere noisy, as it keeps playing with the window closed

Who Blanket is not for

  • Skip it if you're on Windows, a Mac or a phone, because it's Linux only
  • Too light for people who want a big library, with 14 sounds built in

Why Blanket gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • AValue for moneyIt costs nothing. Blanket is free, open-source software under the GPL, with no paid plan at all. The developer takes donations if you want to say thanks.
  • AFree plan and trialThe whole app is free: all 14 sounds, your own audio files, presets and background playback. There's no paid tier to hold anything back.
  • BFeaturesSmall on purpose, and it does its one job fully. Mix sounds at their own volumes, save presets, add your own files and run it from your desktop's media controls. The built-in library stops at 14 sounds.
  • BEase of useInstall it from Flathub or your distribution's packages and press play. There's no App Store rating on record for a Linux app, so it stops at a B.
  • DPlatforms and integrationsLinux only. The project's README mentions Windows, macOS, Android and web apps only as other people's projects inspired by Blanket.
