Key features

ScreenZen

Delay before an app opens
A wait is added before a distracting app opens, and it can lengthen with each open. A message of your choice, such as a question to yourself, is shown meanwhile.
Interrupted sessions
Apps can be opened for short periods only, so each session ends with a prompt to decide whether to keep going.
Limits and strict blocks
Set a daily goal per app and optionally block it at the limit. Strict blocks can apply to time ranges, after a number of opens or after a set screen time.
Schedules by day and time
Settings can differ by day of the week and time of day for each app, for example stricter rules during work hours or at bedtime.
Lock mode
Settings can be locked so they cannot be changed on impulse, and the site says lock mode can prevent uninstalling the app.
halo companion device
An optional Bluetooth device, sold separately, that blocks chosen apps while the phone is inside its radius of up to 50 ft, such as a bedroom.

StayFree

Four ways to block
Block an app or site immediately, restrict it at set times, cap its daily use, or set a time limit for each session. Daily limits can cover whole categories as well as single apps and sites.
Cross-device usage stats
Charts of app and website use combined across your devices. The Google Play listing says devices can be connected without creating an account, and usage can be exported as CSV.
In-app blocking for social media
The browser extension hides parts of YouTube, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X and Snapchat, such as Shorts, reels, comments and recommendations, without blocking the whole site.
Keyword blocking and over-use reminders
The extension can block any website that displays chosen keywords, and StayFree notifies you when you have spent too long on a site or in an app.
PIN and challenge protection
Require a PIN code, password or text challenge before limits and settings can be changed, to stop impulsive edits.
Focus mode and sleep mode
On Android, focus mode blocks distracting apps at scheduled times and sleep mode disables all apps at the end of the day.
