Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three spend and bill pay tools we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.6GPA

    Ramp

    Free plan · from $15/mo

    For: Most small companies

Ramp's Free plan gives unlimited corporate cards with spending controls, receipts collected by text or Slack and matched to card spend, travel booking, bill pay by ACH, card, check or wire, invoicing and QuickBooks Online or Xero sync, with no user limit listed. It runs on the web, iPhone and Android, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.9 from about 47,000 ratings. Know the limits: the card is issued by Celtic Bank and needs credit approval, and NetSuite, Sage Intacct and multi-entity support need Plus at $15 a user a month plus a platform fee the pricing page does not state.

  2. 2nd

    3.2GPA

    Airwallex

    Free plan · from $12/mo

For: Businesses that pay or spend in several currencies

Airwallex gives a business accounts that hold more than 20 currencies, local transfers to over 120 countries and Visa cards with no foreign transaction fees, plus expenses, reimbursements, bill pay and invoicing. Explore has no monthly fee for up to 10 Spend users; Airwallex earns on conversion, 0.5% above the interbank rate for major currencies and 1% for others, and on SWIFT transfers at $15 to $25. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 580 ratings. It is second because most small companies pay in one currency, where Ramp does the job free, and the eleventh Spend user moves you to Grow at $12 each plus a platform fee it does not publish.

  3. 3rd

    3.0GPA

    Zoho Expense

    Free plan · from $3/mo

For: Teams that only need staff expense reports

Zoho Expense reads receipts with AI, builds expense reports, checks them against your policies and tracks mileage by GPS. The free plan covers 3 users with 20 receipt scans each a month, and Standard is $3 a user a month billed annually ($4 monthly), adding Visa and Mastercard card feeds and ACH reimbursements. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 8,200 ratings. It is third because it does a smaller job than the two above: it lists no supplier bill pay, travel booking and per diems need Premium at $5 a user, and anyone who creates an expense or report is billed as a user.

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 14

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where spend and bill pay tools land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 14

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 0

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • Brex

To replace Brex you would be making cards issued through a bank. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Ramp

To replace Ramp you would be making cards issued through a bank. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Airwallex

To replace Airwallex you would be making cards issued through a bank. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Aspire

Aspire is free, so making your own would save you nothing.
