Worth knowing
Google Password Manager
- There is no standalone desktop app: on a computer, passwords are filled in Chrome or viewed at passwords.google.com.
- On iPhone and iPad it depends on Chrome being set as the AutoFill provider in the device's settings.
- With standard encryption Google holds the key to saved passwords. On-device encryption is optional and cannot be removed once set up.
- If you are signed out of Chrome, saved passwords stay on that device and are not available on your other devices.
LastPass
- The Free plan works on one device type, computer or mobile but not both, and comes with self-service support only.
- Paid plans are priced per month but billed annually; the pricing page shows no monthly billing option.
- Teams is capped at 50 users, and single sign-on is limited to 3 apps on Business; unlimited SSO apps need Business Max.
- On Linux the download page offers browser extensions only; the desktop app installers are for Windows and macOS.
Key features
Google Password Manager
- Save and autofill in Chrome and Android
- Chrome offers to save a password when you enter one and fills it in on every device where you are signed in. On Android it fills passwords in apps once Google is the autofill service.
- Passkeys
- Creates and saves passkeys to your Google Account, and can automatically create a passkey when you sign in with a password that is already saved.
- Password Checkup
- Identifies security issues with saved passwords, notifies you when one turns up in a data breach and helps you change it.
- Strong password suggestions
- Suggests strong, unique passwords for new accounts and saves them to your Google Account so you do not have to remember them.
- On-device encryption
- An optional setting that locks passwords and passkeys with a key only you hold, unlocked with your Google password or an eligible device's screen lock.
- Import and export
- Imports passwords from another manager as a CSV file at passwords.google.com, and exports them from Chrome, Android or the same site.
LastPass
- Password vault and autofill
- Stores an unlimited number of passwords, notes and payment cards in an encrypted vault and fills saved logins and forms for you. A generator creates new passwords.
- Passkeys
- Creates, stores and manages passkeys alongside passwords through the browser extension or mobile app, and syncs them across devices and browsers.
- Sharing and emergency access
- Premium and Families share items with several people and can grant a trusted person emergency access. The Free plan shares one password with one person at a time.
- Security dashboard and dark web monitoring
- Flags weak, reused and old passwords and alerts you if your information turns up in a breach database. The pricing page lists both in every plan.
- Admin console and security policies
- Business plans add an admin console, shared folders and security policies: 25 on Teams and more than 100 on Business and Business Max, which also add groups.
- SSO, MFA and SaaS monitoring
- Business includes single sign-on for 3 apps. Business Max adds unlimited SSO apps, advanced MFA and discovery of the SaaS apps and AI tools employees use.
