How we grade them

2.6GPAOpenSignGood2.6GPASignWellGood
Value for money
CTeams is $19.99 a user a month billed yearly ($39.99 monthly), so about $60 a month for three. That's the dearer end of this category, for shared templates and your own storage. The free cloud plan covers 20 documents a month if you can do without sharing; self-hosting doesn't count.
B$30 a month for up to three senders on Business, billed yearly ($36 monthly). That's $10 a head for unlimited documents and templates, inside this category's cheapest quarter. A fourth sender adds $12 a month.
Free plan and trial
AThe free cloud plan has unlimited signatures and templates, 14 field types, signing order and completion certificates, with no cap a normal person would reach. Automatic reminders and the API are the paid bits.
CThe free plan is one sender, one template and 3 documents a month, with the API and the audit trail. Handy for the odd form, nowhere near 20 a month. There's no trial of the paid plans on record.
Features
CTemplates, signing order, expiry dates, decline, sealed completion certificates, plus API, webhooks, Zapier and embedded signing on paid plans. The gaps: custom branding needs Enterprise, there's no mobile app, and payment requests are still listed as coming soon.
BUnlimited documents, template links, bulk send, branding, conditional fields, data validation, signer attachments, in-person signing and 50 SMS credits a month on Business. Nothing in the listing shows a gap in the core signing job.
Ease of use
CNo store rating on record. The cloud version is a web app with templates to set up; hosting it yourself means following the self-host guide and running a server.
CNo store rating on record, and no phone app. It's a web app where you set up your templates and fields once, which is quick enough, but there's still setting up to do.
Platforms and integrations
BWeb only, with Zapier, Dropbox and Gmail, and an API, webhooks and embedded signing on paid plans. No phone app yet, so it's web with integrations.
BWeb only, with Close, QuickBooks Online, Xero and thousands more through Zapier, plus an API with 25 free documents a month on every plan, webhooks and an MCP server.

Key features

OpenSign

Unlimited free signatures
Both the free cloud plan and the self-hosted version allow unlimited signatures, requests to others and templates.
Open source and self-hostable
The code is on GitHub under the AGPL-3 license and can be installed on your own servers by following the self-host guide.
Completion certificates
Signed files are sealed with a certificate, so any later change breaks the signature, and come with a log of access and timestamps.
Templates and signing order
Reusable templates, 14 field types, signing order, document expiry and an option for signers to decline.
API, webhooks and Zapier
Paid plans add API access, webhooks, a Zapier integration, embedded signing and your own Gmail or SMTP account for emails.
Premium credits
Paid plans include credits used for API sends, public signing links, bulk sends and kiosk-mode signing in person.

SignWell

Unlimited documents
Paid plans charge by sender, not by envelope or signer, so there is no cap on the number of signing requests.
Templates, links and bulk send
Save documents as templates, share a template as a public link, and bulk send one document to many recipients from Light up.
Smart fields
Business adds conditional field rules, group checkbox rules, data validation and requests for attachments from signers.
API on every plan
Each plan includes 25 API documents a month, then charges per document, with embedded signing, webhooks, SDKs and an MCP server.
Audit trail and compliance
Tamper-evident documents and audit trails on all plans; paid plans add a SOC 2 Type II report and HIPAA support.
Integrations
Native integrations with Close, QuickBooks Online and Xero, plus thousands of other apps through Zapier, and DocuSign import.
