Who each one suits

Rock

  • Agencies and freelancers who bring clients into project spaces as guests
  • Growing teams that want a flat bill instead of per-seat pricing
  • Small teams replacing a separate chat app and task board

Slack

  • Teams that want conversations organized by channel rather than email threads
  • Companies that work with outside partners in shared channels
  • Organizations that already run on Salesforce
  • Teams that connect many third-party apps to their chat

Worth knowing

Rock

  • The Free plan stops at 3 group spaces, 5 members per space, and 50 tasks and 50 notes per space.
  • Video and audio calls run through Zoom, Google Meet or Jitsi; Rock does not host calls itself.
  • Sprints, recurring tasks, custom fields, time tracking, webhooks and Zapier are limited to the Unlimited plan.
  • Rock does not offer refunds; a canceled plan stays active until the end of the billing period.

Slack

  • The Free plan keeps only 90 days of message history searchable, allows 10 apps, and limits huddles and Slack Connect to 1:1.
  • SAML single sign-on and SCIM start at Business+; ongoing Slackbot access is on Business+ and Enterprise+, with a limited trial on Free and Pro.
  • Enterprise search, multiple SAML configurations and native data loss prevention are limited to Enterprise+, which is priced by sales.
  • In a browser, huddles are supported only in Chrome and Firefox.

Key features

Rock

Spaces for each project or client
A space is a project room with its own chat, tasks, notes, files and meetings. 1:1 spaces are unlimited on both plans; the Free plan allows 3 group spaces.
Messaging
Real-time chat in every space with threads, reactions, mentions, voice messages and polls. Scheduled messages and the pinboard are part of the Unlimited plan.
Tasks in board, list and calendar views
Tasks take assignees, due dates, labels and checklists. Sprints, recurring tasks, custom fields and the time tracker need the Unlimited plan.
Notes and files
Write briefs and meeting notes inside a space, and keep uploads next to linked folders from Google Drive, Dropbox and OneDrive. Free spaces hold 250 MB of uploads each.
Meetings through Zoom, Meet and Jitsi
Start a Zoom, Google Meet or Jitsi call from the message bar and the join link is posted to the space. All three integrations are included on the Free plan.
Rock MCP and custom API
An MCP server lets assistants such as Claude, Codex and Cursor read spaces and create tasks, notes and messages on both plans. The custom API, webhooks and Zapier need Unlimited.

Slack

Channels and direct messages
Conversations are organized into channels for each project, topic or team, alongside direct messages. Paid plans keep the full message and file history searchable; Free keeps 90 days.
Huddles and clips
Huddles are audio and video meetings with screen sharing, 1:1 on Free and for groups on paid plans. Clips are recorded audio or screen updates shared in a conversation.
Slack Connect
Message people outside the company. Free allows 1:1 external direct messages; paid plans add group chats and shared channels with up to 250 organizations.
Canvases and lists
A canvas holds text, files, images and video inside Slack, and lists are used to manage projects and organize tasks with teammates.
Workflow Builder and apps
Workflow Builder automates routine processes without code, and the app directory lists more than 2,600 apps. A Free workspace can connect up to 10 of them.
AI in Slack
Pro includes AI conversation summaries. Business+ adds AI search, daily recaps, file summaries, workflow generation and the Slackbot personal agent, subject to plan limits.
