Google Chat review

3.0GPA

Very good · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 9, 2026

Best for teams already on Google Workspace

If your company pays for Google Workspace, you already have Google Chat, and it's good enough that a second bill for chat is hard to justify. It sits inside Gmail and does the basics well. But you can't buy it on its own, there's no proper desktop app, and it does less around the edges than Slack.

Who Google Chat is for

  • Great if you already pay for Google Workspace and don't fancy a second bill for chat
  • Handy when you're in Gmail all day, since Chat sits in the same window
  • Good for teams leaving Slack or Teams, because Google has tools to bring your history over
  • A treat if you like building your own bots, with an API, webhooks and Apps Script

Who Google Chat is not for

  • Skip it if you're not on Google Workspace, because Chat isn't sold on its own
  • Not for you if you want a real desktop app, since computers get a browser tab or a Chrome app
  • Pricey if you want Gemini to summarise chats, which starts on Business Standard at $14
  • Too light for teams who lean on Slack's 2,600 apps and its Workflow Builder

Why Google Chat gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • BValue for moneyIt comes with every Workspace plan from $7 a person, next to Gmail, Drive and Meet. Already on Workspace? It costs nothing extra. If you're not, it's a whole office suite to buy for a chat app.
  • BFree plan and trialA personal Google Account can use Chat for nothing, with direct messages and spaces. That's not a team setup, though: no announcement spaces and no webhooks. For work it's a 14-day Workspace trial.
  • BFeaturesDirect messages, spaces with threads, huddles, voice and video messages, tasks and decent search. Gemini summaries need Business Standard. One fan on Hacker News still misses being able to archive a space.
  • BEase of use4.6 from about 306,000 App Store ratings. It's already in Gmail's sidebar, so there's nothing new to open. But the split between direct messages and spaces has confused plenty of reviewers.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsBrowser, iPhone and Android, with an API, webhooks and apps for Jira, GitHub, Asana and Salesforce. The desktop "app" is a web app you install through Chrome, so it's not a real one.

The good

The pitch is simple. You probably already have it. Google Chat comes with every Google Workspace plan, so if your work email is Gmail, it's sitting in the sidebar right now.

That's handy in a boring, everyday way. Email on one side, chat next to it, no extra app to keep open.

It does what you'd expect. Direct messages, group chats, and spaces, which is Google's word for channels. Spaces have threads, so a side chat about "who's bringing the projector" doesn't bury everything else.

It ties into the rest of Google, too. Share a Drive file, start a Meet call or give someone a task without leaving the conversation.

There's room to grow. Google says a space can hold up to 500,000 people on eligible plans, and there are apps for Jira, GitHub, Asana and Salesforce.

And opinions have warmed up. More than one Hacker News commenter says it's much better than it used to be, and one who uses both rates it above Teams.

The stuff that'll bug you

You can't just buy Google Chat. It only comes inside Google Workspace. So for a business, choosing Chat really means choosing Gmail, Drive and the rest.

There's no proper desktop app. Google's help pages offer a "standalone app", but it's a web app you install through Chrome, and Chrome has to be open for it to work. One commenter grumbled about keeping a whole browser running just to chat.

The AI sits on the dearer plan. Gemini in Chat, which summarises and translates conversations, isn't in Business Starter. It starts at Business Standard.

Small gaps add up. Even a fan on Hacker News listed two: you can't archive a space, and the message box won't do nested bullet points.

Then there's Google's history. It has launched and closed so many chat apps that it's a running joke, and some people don't trust this one to stick around.

Google's own page also says some listed features are "coming soon" or only on Business and Enterprise plans. So check before you count on one.

Money

There's no price for Chat itself. You pay for Google Workspace, per person, on a one-year commitment.

Business Starter is $7 a month. Chat is all there apart from Gemini, with 30 GB of storage each.

Business Standard is $14. That's where Gemini in Chat arrives, along with 2 TB of storage. Business Plus is $22, with 5 TB and Vault for keeping and searching old data.

Those three stop at 300 users. Past that it's Enterprise and a call with sales.

Is it free for anyone? Sort of. Friends and families chat on personal Google Accounts without paying, but for a company it's the 14-day trial, then a plan.

Already paying for Workspace? Then the sum is easy. Chat costs you nothing more, where Slack Pro would be another $7.25 a person.

What actual users say

Google Chat has 4.6 on the App Store from about 306,000 ratings.

Funny thing: lots of the reviewers aren't at work at all. They're friend groups and families on a mix of iPhones and Android phones who wanted one chat that works for everyone.

The crossest reviews are from 2021 and 2022, when Google moved people over from Hangouts. They hated the layout, with every message down one side of the screen. The screens on Google's listing now show bubbles on both sides, so that one looks sorted.

What else did they grumble about? Direct messages and spaces living in separate places, slow video uploads, and redesigns nobody asked for.

Hacker News is split. One person has been on it since it launched and says it's everything they want in a chat. Another only has it because their clients do, and calls it terrible.

A third says it's been getting slower for years.

What is Google Chat?

Google Chat is the messaging app in Google Workspace, with direct messages, group conversations and persistent spaces for teams. It is available inside Gmail as well as on its own, and ties into Drive, Calendar, Meet and Tasks for sharing files, scheduling meetings and assigning work. Chat is not sold separately: it is included with every Workspace plan, and Gemini features such as summaries and translation start at Business Standard.

Good for

  • Organizations already paying for Google Workspace
  • Teams that work in Gmail and want chat in the same window
  • Companies moving chat history over from Slack or Teams

Worth knowing

  • Chat is not sold on its own: a business gets it by paying for a Google Workspace plan that also covers Gmail, Drive and Meet.
  • Gemini in Chat is left out of Business Starter, and Google marks some listed features as coming soon or limited to Business and Enterprise plans.
  • There is no desktop app: computers use the web interface or Chat inside Gmail, and the apps are for phones and tablets.
  • Business Starter, Standard and Plus can be bought for a maximum of 300 users.

Key features

Direct messages and spaces
Chat covers direct messages, group messaging and persistent spaces with threaded conversations. Google says a space can hold up to 500,000 members on eligible plans.
Huddles and voice or video messages
Huddles let teammates connect in real time for drop-in collaboration, and updates can be shared as recorded audio or video messages.
Gemini in Chat
Gemini summarizes conversations, lists action items and translates messages. The pricing table includes it from Business Standard up, not in Business Starter.
Built into Gmail and Workspace
Chat appears in Gmail's left navigation and works with Drive, Calendar, Meet and Tasks, so files, meetings and assigned tasks are handled from a conversation.
Chat apps and API
Chat apps cover tools such as Asana, Jira, GitHub and Salesforce. Custom apps can be built with the Chat API, webhooks and Apps Script, or without code in AppSheet.
Migration and interoperability
Existing data can be migrated from Slack or Teams, and interoperability products from Mio and NextPlane connect Chat with other messaging platforms.
