Discord review

3.4GPA

Very good · out of 4.0 · graded Oct 9, 2026

Best for free hangouts for friends and communities

Discord is the best free place for a group to hang out online. Voice rooms you drop into without calling anyone, video, screen sharing and streaming all cost nothing. But it's built for friends and communities. There's no business plan and no admin tier for companies, so for an office we'd look at Slack or Teams first.

Who Discord is for

  • Great if your friends game together and want a voice room that's always open
  • Handy when you run a club or a community and need a free home for it
  • Good for mixed setups, with apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, phones and consoles
  • A treat if you like building bots, since there's an official API and an App Directory

Who Discord is not for

  • Too light for offices that need company controls, as the site lists no business plan or admin tier
  • Not for you if your written chats must be end-to-end encrypted, as only calls are
  • Tight if you send big files, since uploads top out at 50 MB on Nitro Basic and 1 GB on Nitro
  • Pricey if a whole team wants HD streaming, because Nitro is $9.99 a person
  • Skip it if app redesigns wind you up, because reviewers have grumbled about them since 2019

Why Discord gets a 3.4

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • BValue for moneyNobody has to pay. Nitro Basic is $2.99 a month and Nitro is $9.99, but they buy personal perks like emoji, bigger uploads and HD streaming. There's nothing for a company to buy, which cuts both ways.
  • AFree plan and trialText, voice and video chat, servers, direct messages and streaming are all free. Nitro only raises limits like upload size, stream quality and message length. You can run a whole community without paying.
  • BFeaturesDrop-in voice rooms, video, screen sharing, game streaming, bots and end-to-end encrypted calls. But it's made for friends and communities, so there's no admin tier for companies, and text isn't encrypted the way calls are.
  • BEase of use4.7 from about 3.6 million App Store ratings, so plenty of people cope. But one reviewer talks of a sharp learning curve and friends who gave up, and phone redesigns have annoyed regulars since 2019.
  • APlatforms and integrationsWindows, Mac, Linux, iPhone, Android and the browser, plus PlayStation, Xbox and Meta Quest. There's an official API and an App Directory. It's on pretty much everything you own.

The good

What's Discord best at? Hanging out. It's less like sending messages and more like having a room your friends wander in and out of.

The clever bit is the voice channel. It sits in the sidebar showing who's in there. You hop in when you're free and leave when you're done, and nobody has to ring anybody.

So a Friday night goes like this. Two of you are already talking, a third drops in after dinner, someone shares their screen. No link to send, no invite to accept.

It's all free, too. Text, voice, video, servers, direct messages and streaming cost nothing.

Calls are private now as well. Discord says every voice and video call has been end-to-end encrypted by default since March 2026, apart from Stage channels.

And it's on nearly everything. Windows, Mac, Linux, phones and the browser, and you can link a PlayStation or an Xbox.

The stuff that'll bug you

It's not built for work. That's the big one.

Discord's site lists no business plan, no per-seat pricing and no admin tier for companies. The paid plans are personal perks, like custom emoji and bigger uploads.

Your messages aren't end-to-end encrypted, either. Calls are, but Discord says it has no current plans to do the same for text.

There's a learning curve. One App Store reviewer says close friends tried it and hated it, and wants a tutorial for newcomers.

The phone app keeps changing. Reviews from 2019 to 2023 grumble about updates that move everything around, and 2026 brought another mobile refresh. Bugs come up too, like messages taking up to an hour to send on mobile data.

One more for this year: Discord now sorts accounts into teen and adult groups. It says the great majority of people won't be asked to confirm their age, but new accounts start with adult content and settings locked until they're placed in a group.

Money

Honestly, most people never need to pay. Chat, calls and streaming are all in the free version.

Nitro Basic is $2.99 a month. You get custom emoji anywhere, 50 MB uploads and custom app icons.

Nitro is $9.99 a month, or $99.99 for the year on the US App Store, which is about 17% less. It adds 1 GB uploads, HD streaming, custom profiles, 2 server Boosts and messages up to 4,000 characters.

Nitro's page now lists Xbox Game Pass (Starter Edition) as well, in select regions. If you'd play those games anyway, that changes the sum.

Would we pay? For a group that streams games to each other, maybe. For a team, no, because none of it is a work feature.

One thing to watch: Discord says Nitro prices vary by country and plan. So what the app shows you may not match ours.

What actual users say

Discord has 4.7 on the App Store from about 3.6 million ratings. The fans are on it every day, texting, talking and video calling friends, mostly around games. One says setting up a server feels like founding a small town.

What gets them cross? Updates. Most of the critical reviews are from people who love Discord and hate what an update did to the phone app.

One 2023 reviewer went the other way. They said the redesign made it easier to see what friends were playing.

Then the bugs. Sound that friends can't hear in a voice chat, a setting you can only change in a browser, messages that crawl on mobile data.

On Hacker News, Discord is simply where groups live now. A ham radio club, a podcast's listeners, a game modding server with about 20 people in voice chats at once.

Not everyone's happy about that. One commenter wishes open-source projects wouldn't settle there, and another is hunting for something to host themselves.

What is Discord?

Discord is a chat app where friend groups and communities talk over text, voice and video. People can drop into a voice chat without placing a call, and can stream a game or screen to the group. It was built for talking with friends while gaming and is free to use; the paid Nitro subscriptions add personal perks such as larger uploads, HD streaming and custom emoji rather than business features.

Discord has a free plan. Paid plans start at $2.99 per month. See every plan

Good for

  • Gaming groups and friends who want always-open voice chats
  • Online communities that need a free place to gather
  • Groups that stream games or screens to each other
  • Developers building bots and apps on a chat API

Worth knowing

  • The paid plans are personal Nitro subscriptions; the site lists no per-seat business plan or admin tier for companies.
  • Uploads are capped at 50 MB on Nitro Basic and 1 GB on Nitro, and HD streaming needs Nitro.
  • Discord says Nitro prices vary by country and plan, so the US prices listed here may not match what the app shows elsewhere.

Key features

Servers with text and voice chats
A server is a customizable space for a group or community. Members hop in and out of its voice or text chats without having to call or invite anyone.
Video chat and streaming
Video chat and screen share work in direct messages and group DMs, and Go Live streams a game to a server. HD streaming is a Nitro perk.
Direct messages and group DMs
A friends list lets people talk outside of servers, with voice calls, video chat and screen sharing available directly in DMs and group DMs.
Activities and Soundboard
Activities let a group watch videos or play built-in games together inside Discord, and the Soundboard plays sound clips during voice calls.
Custom emoji and profiles
Servers can upload their own emoji and stickers. Nitro lets a member use them anywhere and adds custom profiles, app icons and color themes.
Apps and API
Discord has an official API, a developer portal and an App Directory, and consoles can be linked so PlayStation and Xbox players join the same chats.
