How we grade them
| 3.4GPAGoogle MeetVery good | 3.4GPAMicrosoft TeamsVery good | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | B$7 a person gets 24-hour meetings plus Gmail, Drive and Docs, which is a lot for the money. But recording and noise cancelling start at $14, and Meet isn't sold on its own. | ATeams Essentials is $4.00 a person a month, paid yearly, with meetings for 300 and recordings with transcripts. Slack Pro is $7.25. And if your company's on Microsoft 365, you probably have it already. |
| Free plan and trial | AUp to 100 people for 60 minutes with only a Google Account, and no time limit on one-on-one calls. Zoom's free plan stops at 40 minutes. | BThe free version covers one person: unlimited chat, group calls of 60 minutes with up to 100 people and 5 GB of storage. That's for family, not for a team. The one-month trial of the paid plans needs a card. |
| Features | BScreen sharing, backgrounds and reactions are free. Recording, noise cancelling and Gemini notes start at Business Standard, and breakout rooms and polls are paid extras too. | AChat, channels, meetings for 300, breakout rooms, recordings with transcripts, a whiteboard and shared Office files. Phone lines, webinars and Copilot are there too, if you pay more. |
| Ease of use | A4.8 from about 2.3 million App Store ratings. On a computer you click a link and the call opens in a browser tab. There's nothing to download. | B4.8 from about 3.4 million App Store ratings, which is hard to argue with. But the written reviews grumble about clutter and phone bugs, and Hacker News regulars call the desktop app slow. |
| Platforms and integrations | BChrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari on a Mac, Windows PC, Chromebook or Linux, plus iPhone and Android apps. There's no desktop app, and it mostly plugs into Google's own tools. | BWindows, Mac, iPhone, Android and four browsers, and Microsoft's pricing page counts over 250 business apps that plug in. But there's no Linux app. Microsoft says Teams is no longer supported there. |
| Best for | quick calls with nothing to install | offices that already pay for Microsoft 365 |

Worth knowing
Google Meet
- No-cost meetings end at 60 minutes unless they are 1:1 or mobile calls.
- Paid Meet features are not sold separately: they come with a Google Workspace plan, or Google One Premium for individuals.
- Business Starter has no recording, noise cancellation or Gemini in Meet, and Business plans stop at 300 users.
- Computers join through the browser; the site lists apps only for phones and tablets, not a desktop app.
Microsoft Teams
- The free version is built for one person: group calls stop at 60 minutes and 100 participants, with 5 GB of cloud storage.
- Teams Essentials and the Microsoft 365 Business plans stop at 300 users; larger organizations need Teams Enterprise or Microsoft 365 E3 or E5.
- There is no Linux desktop app: Microsoft points Linux users to a progressive web app and says the Linux client is no longer supported.
- Webinar hosting is left out of Teams Essentials and Business Basic, and phone service, Teams Premium and Copilot are separately priced add-ons.
