How we grade them
| 2.0GPAOwnerFair | 2.6GPASquarespaceGood | |
|---|---|---|
| Value for money | DGraded against its own alternatives, as it's a done-for-you restaurant service: $249 a month plus a 5% fee per order, or $499 flat, over ten times Wix's $17 or Squarespace's $19. Guests pay a 5% fee on each order too. The branded app and marketing are what the extra buys. | CBasic is $19 a month for one site on yearly billing ($25 monthly), and it's the plan a small business would buy, since the store comes with it. That's the ordinary middle of this category ($9 to $22). Core at $29 drops the 2% store fee. |
| Free plan and trial | FNothing free: no free plan, no trial and no self-serve sign-up, just a demo. It's month to month with no contract or cancellation fee, which helps, but you're paying from the start. | CNo free plan. There's a 14-day trial with no card needed, which is long enough to build the thing and see if you like it, but after that every site needs a paid plan. |
| Features | CFor a restaurant it does the lot: a site with SEO pages, ordering, catering, a branded app, loyalty, email and text campaigns, delivery and POS links. But it's a smaller job than this category's, and Owner says you give up control over how the site looks. | BTemplates, a drag-and-drop editor, a store on every plan, invoicing, memberships, forms, newsletters and SEO tools. That's the whole job of a small business site. Custom code and pop-ups wait for Core, but nothing core is missing. |
| Ease of use | A4.78 from 1,544 App Store ratings for Owner's app. Owner's team builds the site and moves your restaurant over, so there's very little for you to set up. | B4.6 from about 18,800 App Store ratings for its phone app. Templates do most of the design work, so you're mostly swapping in your own words and photos. |
| Platforms and integrations | BWeb, iPhone and Android, with Clover built in and Toast, Square and Lightspeed connecting, so orders reach the kitchen. There's no desktop app, which keeps it off an A. | BWeb, iPhone and Android, with Google Workspace, Mailchimp, Zapier, Stripe, PayPal and Printful, plus commerce APIs on Core and up. There's no desktop app, which keeps it off an A. |
| Best for | restaurants taking orders off the delivery apps | polished template sites with a shop built in |

Worth knowing
Owner

- It is built only for restaurants, and Owner says plainly that you give up some control over how the site looks in return for its standard system.
- There is no free trial or self-serve sign-up: it starts with a demo. Billing is month to month, with no contract or cancellation fee.
- Third-party delivery costs a flat fee per order; Owner suggests letting guests pay delivery under $30 and covering about $3 on larger orders.
Squarespace
- There is no free plan; after the 14-day trial every site needs a paid plan.
- Basic takes a 2% fee on online store sales and allows only 2 contributors; Core removes both limits.
- Custom JavaScript, code injection, pop-ups and shipping labels all need Core or higher.
- The free domain covers the first year of an annual plan only and then renews at Squarespace's standard rate.
