Best for a free online spreadsheet with macros and locked cells

Zoho Sheet is a full online spreadsheet that's free if it's just you. It does the grown-up stuff too: pivot tables, more than 350 functions, VBA macros and cells you can lock for certain people. Teams can't buy it by itself, though, as it only comes inside Zoho WorkDrive, Workplace or Zoho One.

Who Zoho Sheet is for

  • Great if it's just you and you want a free spreadsheet on the web, your laptop and your phone
  • Handy when a shared sheet has cells nobody else should touch, since you can lock them for specific people
  • Good for teams on Zoho Workplace, WorkDrive or Zoho One, who have it already

Who Zoho Sheet is not for

  • Skip it if you want to buy your team a spreadsheet and nothing else, as there's no standalone Sheet plan
  • Not for you if you need a finished desktop app, because the Windows and macOS ones are still in beta
  • Tight if you work offline on an iPad, which the iPad app doesn't do yet

Zoho Sheet is an online spreadsheet with real-time collaboration, cell locking and version history, plus apps for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. Zia, its AI assistant, suggests charts and pivot tables and cleans up inconsistent data. The version for individuals is free, and teams get Sheet as part of a Zoho WorkDrive, Zoho Workplace or Zoho One subscription.

Worth knowing

  • There is no standalone paid Sheet plan; teams get it through a Zoho WorkDrive, Zoho Workplace or Zoho One subscription.
  • The Windows and macOS desktop apps are labeled beta, and the Windows app does not sync offline edits automatically.
  • Offline use is available on iPhone but not yet in the iPad app, which Zoho says is under development.
  • Organizations without one of those subscriptions pay $10 per device for the Zoho Office desktop apps; the page does not show a billing period.
