Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three local SEO tools we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.0GPA

    Google Business Profile

    Free

For: Every local business that serves customers in person

Google Business Profile is Google's free listing. Once verified, you set hours, photos, services and a service area on Google Search and Maps, reply to reviews, post offers and events, and see the searches, calls and direction requests that came from the profile, in a browser or the iPhone and Android apps. Chains with 10 or more locations get bulk upload and the API at no charge. Know the limits: it covers Google only, with no map rank tracking and no Bing, Apple Maps or Yelp; nothing can be edited until Google verifies the profile by a method it chooses; and online-only businesses cannot have one.

    BrightLocal

    Free trial · from $31/mo

For: Businesses and agencies tracking map rankings and listings

BrightLocal tracks local rankings for up to 100 keywords per location, maps them on a geogrid, audits listings and citations, and checks whether ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews recommend a business, with white-label reports. Track is $31 a month for one location billed annually ($41 monthly), after a 14-day trial with no card. It is second because it costs money from the start and the platform works only in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Listing sync needs Manage at $40, review replies Grow at $49, and Citation Builder is paid per site on top.

  3. 3rd

    2.4GPA

    Localo

    Free trial · from $39/mo

For: Businesses outside the US, UK, Canada and Australia

Localo works in any language and country. For a Google Business Profile it maps rankings for each keyword across a grid, writes and schedules posts to Google and Facebook with AI, keeps every Google review in one place, guards the profile against unwanted edits and hands out weekly tasks. Single Business is $39 a month ($389 a year), after a 14-day trial with no card. It is third because it costs more than BrightLocal's Track for one location, there is no free plan, Pro plans optimize only half the profiles they connect (Pro 10 connects 10 and optimizes 5), and plans renew without a reminder.

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 62

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where local SEO tools land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 62

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 0

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • Bing Places for Business

Bing Places for Business is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

  • Google Business Profile

Google Business Profile is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

  • Apple Business

Apple Business is free, so making your own would save you nothing.

  • LocalClarity

To replace LocalClarity you would be making listings sent to dozens of directories and map apps, which takes an agreement with each. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
