Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

13

popup and widget tools we grade, from their own pages

Add sign-up popups, banners and other widgets to any website, and see which ones work.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about popup and widget tools, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

We grade 13 popup and widget tools

6 of them are free or have a free plan, and 5 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $19 a month in the middle

From $4.83 (POWR) to $299 (Wisepops), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

Best value: OptiMonk, OptinMonster and POWR

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

0 of 13 have iPhone and Android apps

13 run in a web browser and 0 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.2

0 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is Getsitecontrol, at 2.8.

  6. 6

    Best free option: Getsitecontrol

Getsitecontrol has the highest GPA of the free ones, 2.8. Popups, bars, forms and surveys, with email campaigns built in.

  7. 7

13 worth keeping, 0 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 13 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 0 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three popup and widget tools we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    2.8GPA

    Getsitecontrol

    Free plan · from $19/mo

For: Most websites and small online stores

Getsitecontrol makes popups, promo bars, sign-up and contact forms and multi-page surveys for any site, targeted by page, segment and schedule, with cart rules on Shopify and A/B tests. It keeps a contact list that sends email broadcasts and flows such as abandoned checkout, and passes sign-ups to Klaviyo, Mailchimp, HubSpot or Zapier. The free plan gives 10,000 widget views a month per site with unlimited widgets and contacts, and Pro is $19 a month per site for up to 100,000 views. Know the limits: emails cost extra, $1.60 per 1,000 on Pro, every site is billed on its own, widgets stop at the monthly view limit, and the free plan keeps its branding.

    2.6GPA

    OptiMonk

    Free plan · from $19/mo

For: Online stores that want popups built by AI

OptiMonk builds popups, spin-to-win wheels, quizzes and upsells for online stores through an AI agent: describe the popup and it designs, writes, publishes and A/B tests it, or you build it from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor through its MCP server. The free plan covers 10,000 pageviews a month on 1 domain with every feature, 1,000 AI credits and no OptiMonk branding. It is second because it costs more as a site grows: every page load counts, so a busier store needs Growth at $69 a month billed yearly ($99 monthly) for 100,000 pageviews. Essential allows 2 domains, counting each subdomain, and EU buyers without a VAT number pay 27% VAT.

    2.4GPA

    POWR

    Free plan · from $4.83/mo

For: Sites that need a popup plus other widgets

POWR sells 60+ small website apps, from popups and forms to galleries, social feeds, product reviews and live chat, which install on more than 70 platforms, including Shopify, Wix and Squarespace, or with embed code. Every app has a free version, and the Popup's Pro upgrade is $11.87 a month billed annually ($15.84 monthly), adding exit intent, delay and click triggers, 1,000 submissions a month and Mailchimp and Zapier sync. It is third because the popup does less than the two above: there is no A/B testing on record, the free and Starter popups stop at 25 submissions a month, each app is paid for on its own, and every app together is $79.19 a month on Business.

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 13

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where popup and widget tools land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 13

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 0

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • Getsitecontrol

To replace Getsitecontrol you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • OptiMonk

To replace OptiMonk you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Poptin

To replace Poptin you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Popupsmart

To replace Popupsmart you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.
