How we grade them

3.2GPABundled NotesVery good3.6GPAUpNoteExcellent
Value for money
APro is $2.79 a month or $27.99 a year, which is under what even the cheaper notes apps here start at. It adds the web app, unlimited bundles and notes, a 15 GB account limit and 400 MB files.
APremium is $1.99 a month, a third of the $5.99 this category typically starts at. Or pay $39.99 once for life, which is less than a year of most rivals. One purchase covers every device you sign in on.
Free plan and trial
BFree forever with no ads, but it's the Android app only. You get 8 bundles, 1,000 notes per bundle, 150 MB for the whole account and 20 MB a file. Plenty for text, tight once you attach photos and videos.
BFree syncs across all your devices, which is nice. But it stops at 50 notes, and attachments, tables, locks and export all need Premium. Fifty notes goes quickly.
Features
BMarkdown that renders as you type, tags, task tags, kanban boards, attachments, repeating reminders and offline editing. Solid. But there's no end-to-end encryption, nothing on the listing connects it to other apps, and a Mac or Windows app isn't planned.
ARich text with Markdown shortcuts, nested notebooks, hashtags, a clipper for Chrome, Safari and Firefox, version history, automatic local backups on desktop, locks and a focus mode. The gap is end-to-end encryption, which it doesn't have.
Ease of use
BInstall it, sign in and start a bundle. Each bundle has its own layout and sorting to pick, so there's a little to learn. There's no App Store rating on record to go by, so a B is as high as we go.
A4.69 from about 1,100 App Store ratings. It's set up for people moving over from Evernote, Apple Notes, Bear or Simplenote. Without an account, notes just stay on the device.
Platforms and integrations
BAndroid, a web app for Pro subscribers, and iPhone in early access. That covers a phone and any browser. No Mac or Windows app is planned, and the listing shows no integrations or API.
BMac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android, plus browser extensions for clipping. That's every device. But there's no web app, and the listing shows no integrations and no API.

Key features

Bundled Notes

Bundles
A bundle is a notebook with its own layout, color, sorting, grouping, tags and to-do settings, so one can look like a grid of notes and another like a list or a board.
Markdown editor
Notes are formatted with Markdown that renders as you type, covering headings, bold, italics, checklists and code, with a formatting toolbar and find-in-text.
Tags and task tags
Tags color-code notes and bundles, and tags set up as task tags turn notes into to-do items that can be checked off.
Kanban boards
Any bundle can switch to board mode, where notes become cards in custom columns that can be reordered, for projects or custom to-do lists.
Sync and offline access
Notes are backed up to your account and synced between devices. They can be read and edited without a connection, and changes sync once you are back online.
Attachments, links and reminders
Images, videos and files can be added to notes, pasted links become rich previews, and reminders can be one-off or repeat daily, weekly or monthly.

UpNote

Notebooks, hashtags and Quick Access
Notes are organized with nested notebooks and hashtags, can be pinned to the top of a list or added to Quick Access, and are filtered by matching keywords.
Rich text and Markdown editor
The editor offers rich text options, Markdown support, lists, images, links, attachments, quotes, code blocks, text highlighting and collapsible sections.
Sync and offline use
Notes sync automatically across devices after you sign in and can be read and written without a connection. Without an account, notes stay on the device.
Web Clipper
Browser extensions for Chrome, Safari and Firefox save a web page into UpNote.
Version history, backup and export
Version history is saved as you edit, the desktop app keeps automatic local backups, and Premium exports notes to text, PDF, HTML or Markdown.
Focus mode, locks and sharing
Focus mode hides the note list and menus, a note can be shared through a secret web link, and Premium adds locks for notes, notebooks and the whole app.
