Value for money
AIt's free software under the GPL, version 3 or later. Every download on the project page costs nothing, and the only money mentioned is a link to a donation page.
AFree and open source under the GPL. The project says it generates no revenue and runs on donations through PayPal, GitHub Sponsors and Liberapay. There's nothing to buy.
Free plan and trial
AAll of it is free: the Windows installer and portable archive, the Linux packages and the macOS installer. There's no paid tier to hold anything back.
AThe full desktop app, the Web Companion extension and the Android app are all free. No paid tier exists, so there's no limit to run into.
Features
BNested nodes, rich text, code with syntax highlighting, images, embedded files, LaTeX equations and find and replace across the whole tree. Solid. But tables only hold plain text, there's no sync of its own on the listing, and the online manual is described as old and discontinued.
AHierarchical tags, subfolders, [[Note]] links with backlinks, AES-256 encryption for single notes, and a browser clipper. With Nextcloud or ownCloud you can restore old versions and trashed notes and share notes publicly. Scripts install from an in-app repository, and there's a built-in MCP server.
Ease of use
BInstall it, make a document and start adding nodes. There's no App Store rating on record to go by, so a B is as high as we go. Don't lean on the manual, which the project page calls old and discontinued.
BNo store rating to go on, so a B is our ceiling. On a computer it's install, pick a folder, write. It gets more involved once you want sync, since the app doesn't sync by itself and leans on a Nextcloud or ownCloud client.
Platforms and integrations
BWindows, Mac and Linux, with a portable Windows build and Linux packages from PPA to Flatpak and Snap. There's no official mobile app. The project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project, and the listing shows no integrations.
BLinux, macOS and Windows, a Chrome and Firefox extension, and hooks into Nextcloud, ownCloud, OpenAI and Groq. The Android app is an APK from GitHub that needs a Nextcloud server running Notes, and the site lists no iOS app. That keeps it off the A.

Who each one suits

CherryTree

  • Keeping structured notes and code snippets in one local file
  • Linux, Windows and macOS users who want the same notebook app on each
  • Moving notes out of older outliners such as KeepNote, Tomboy or Zim

QOwnNotes

  • Nextcloud or ownCloud users who want a desktop Markdown notes app
  • People who keep notes as plain files that any editor can open
  • Users who want to script and rearrange their notes app

Worth knowing

CherryTree

  • There is no official mobile app; the project page points to SourCherry, a third-party Android project.
  • Password protection is available only for single-file storage, and an unprotected copy is extracted to a temporary folder while the document is open.
  • Tables are limited to cells of plain text.
  • The project page describes the online user manual as old and discontinued.

QOwnNotes

  • The app does not sync notes or attachments itself; syncing across devices depends on a Nextcloud or ownCloud sync client or another file-sync tool.
  • The Android app is installed as an APK from its GitHub release page and needs a Nextcloud server running the Notes app. The site lists no iOS app.
  • The browser extension works only while the desktop app is running.
  • Current builds need Windows 10 or macOS 13 or later; the older Qt5 builds cannot use the built-in updater.

Key features

CherryTree

Tree of nodes
Notes are nodes that nest to any depth and can be rearranged by drag and drop. Text and images can link to other nodes, anchors, files, folders and web pages.
Rich text and code
Rich text nodes sit alongside code nodes and codeboxes with syntax highlighting, and code can be run through a configurable terminal command.
Images, tables, files and math
Inserts images that can be resized and rotated, simple tables with CSV import and export, embedded files and rendered LaTeX equations.
Single-file or multi-file storage
A document is one XML or SQLite file, or a set of files and directories. Single-file documents can be password protected using 7-Zip.
Import and export
Imports HTML, plain text and files from apps such as KeepNote, Zim, Tomboy, NoteCase and KeyNote, and exports to HTML, plain text and PDF.
Find and replace across the tree
Searches or replaces within one node, a node and its subnodes, or every node, and can build a table of contents from headings.

QOwnNotes

Plain Markdown files
Notes are plain-text Markdown files in a folder you pick, so existing text files work without an import and any other editor can open them.
Nextcloud and ownCloud integration
Restores older note versions and trashed notes from the server, shares notes publicly, creates Nextcloud Deck cards and manages server to-do lists.
Tags, subfolders and wiki links
Hierarchical tags and note subfolders, plus optional [[Note]] links with autocomplete, heading anchors, aliases and backlinks.
Web Companion browser extension
A Chrome and Firefox extension clips selected text or a screenshot of a page into a note and manages bookmarks kept in notes.
Scripting and AI support
Scripts install from an in-app repository. Opt-in AI support takes Groq and OpenAI keys, and a built-in MCP server lets outside agents search and fetch notes.
Optional note encryption
AES-256 encryption of individual notes is built in, and scripts add Keybase or PGP as alternative encryption methods.
