Who each one suits

Markor

  • People who already use the todo.txt format for tasks
  • Pairing with Syncthing, Nextcloud or Dropbox to reach the same files elsewhere

Quillpad

  • Android users who want a free notes app with no ads
  • People who self-host Nextcloud and want their notes on it
  • Keeping Markdown notes, checklists and reminders in one app

Worth knowing

Markor

  • Android only: the README describes Markor as a text editor for Android and lists no iOS, desktop or web version.
  • There is no built-in sync. The README says Markor will stay an offline app and that a separate sync client has to move the files.
  • Encryption covers a file's text only, not pictures or attachments, and needs Android Marshmallow or newer.
  • Org-Mode support is limited to syntax highlighting and editing buttons; there is no rendered view for it.

Quillpad

  • Android only: the downloads are F-Droid, Google Play and GitHub, and F-Droid lists Android 7.0 or newer as the requirement.
  • Nextcloud sync is labeled experimental and needs the Nextcloud Notes app installed on the server.
  • There is no hosted sync service: notes stay on the device unless file-system or Nextcloud sync is set up.
  • Moving in from Notally or Google Keep relies on separate conversion scripts linked from the README.

Key features

Markor

Plain-text files in many formats
Markdown, todo.txt, Zim wiki text, AsciiDoc, Org-Mode, CSV and plain text get syntax highlighting and format-specific buttons, and the files open in any other text editor.
Notebook, QuickNote and To-Do
Notebook is the root folder for documents and can sit anywhere on the file system. QuickNote is a single Markdown file for fast capture and To-Do is a todo.txt file.
todo.txt task lists
Each line is a task, with @contexts and +projects for grouping. Finished tasks are marked with an x and can be moved to a separate done file.
Preview and export to HTML or PDF
Documents can be previewed, converted and shared as HTML or PDF. Markdown follows the CommonMark specification, with optional math rendering through KaTeX.
Share Into
Text and links shared from other apps can be appended to QuickNote, To-Do or a recent file, or saved to a new one, with URL tracking parameters removed.
File encryption
Text files can be encrypted with AES256 under a password set in the settings. The companion jpencconverter tool decrypts the same files on a desktop.

Quillpad

Markdown notes
Notes are written with Markdown support and can be pinned to the top of the list, archived when they are no longer needed, and found through search.
Task lists and reminders
A note can be a task list, and reminders can be set on notes for events that should not be missed.
Notebooks and tags
Related notes are grouped into notebooks, and tags can be added to notes as a second way to organize them.
Voice recordings and attachments
Voice recordings and other files can be attached to a note so related material stays in one place.
Hidden notes
Notes can be hidden from the main list so they are not shown to other people looking at the device.
File, Nextcloud and zip backup
Notes can sync to the file system as Markdown files in a local or cloud folder, sync with Nextcloud, or be backed up to a zip file and restored later.
