3.2GPAClockify
Free plan · from $3.99/mo
For: Most people, from one freelancer to a team
Clockify logs hours with a timer, a weekly timesheet or a calendar view, then reports them by project, client and team member. It runs on the web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone and Android. The free plan covers up to 5 users with unlimited tracking, the timesheet, calendar, auto tracker and Pomodoro timer, and paid plans start at $3.99 per seat a month, billed annually. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.6 from about 4,400 ratings. Know the limits: free reports cover a range of up to 1 month and export as PDF only, billable rates need Basic, invoicing, time off and approvals need Standard at $5.49 per seat a month, billed annually, and Clockify states that it gives no refunds.

2.8GPARescueTime
Free plan · from $7/mo
For: People who want time recorded without starting a timer
RescueTime records the time you spend in apps and websites in the background, with no timers to start, and turns it into reports and productivity scores. It runs on the web, Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. The free Lite plan includes automatic tracking, activity reports, weekly summaries and 1 goal, and Solo is $7 a month, billed annually, with unlimited history and Focus Sessions that block distracting sites and apps. It is second because it measures one person's time more than it bills it: timesheets, clients, projects and billable rates need Solo+ at $12 a month, billed annually. Lite keeps 2 weeks of history and leaves out the iOS app, and Linux is not on the supported systems list.
The RescueTime Insider’s Guide3rd
3.0GPAActivityWatch
Free
For: People who want their activity data on their own device
ActivityWatch automatically records the active application and window title on your computer and, with extensions, browser tabs and code editors. Everything is stored on your own device and is not sent to a server, and it can be exported, deleted or backed up at any time. It is free and open source with no feature gates, usage limits or ads, and runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and Android. It is third because it asks more of you than the two above: no iOS app is listed, syncing between devices is described as still being worked on, the stable macOS download is listed for Intel with Apple Silicon builds in a pre-release, and the maintainers say they do not work on the project full-time.

Part 05 · Keep or make
Keep or make?
Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself
1
Simple enough to make yourself, of 43
Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where time tracking apps land, by the same rules for every tool.
37
Keep it
It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.
5
Your call
You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.
1
You could make this
What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.
