Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

16

field service apps we grade, from their own pages

Quote, schedule and invoice jobs for a trade business, with an app for the crew on site.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about field service apps, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

We grade 16 field service apps

2 of them are free or have a free plan, and 10 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $49 a month in the middle

From $8.34 (Joist) to $208 (Service Fusion), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

Best value: ServiceM8, Jobber and Joist

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

15 of 16 have iPhone and Android apps

16 run in a web browser and 1 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.4

1 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is ServiceM8, at 3.4.

  6. 6

    Best free option: ServiceM8

ServiceM8 has the highest GPA of the free ones, 3.4. Job management for trades, priced by jobs a month, not users.

  7. 7

16 worth keeping, 0 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 16 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 0 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three field service apps we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.4GPA

    ServiceM8

    Free plan · from $29/mo

For: Most small trade and home-service businesses

ServiceM8 covers job cards, scheduling, quotes and invoices built on site, card and Tap to Pay payments, online booking, automatic client texts and a dispatch map with GPS time tracking. The free plan gives 1 user 30 new jobs a month, and Starter is $29 a month for 50 new jobs with unlimited users; Growing is $79 for 150. It runs on the web, iPhone and Android, with desktop apps for Mac and Windows, and its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.6 from 849 ratings. Know the limits: every plan caps new jobs a month and only Premium Plus lets you go over, forms and proposals start on Growing, and job costing needs Premium at $149.

    2.8GPA

    Jobber

    Free trial · from $29/mo

For: Busy home-service firms with many repeat visits

Jobber covers online booking, quotes clients approve online, scheduling, invoices paid by card, bank or Tap to Pay, a client hub and a crew app that works in Spanish. Core is $29 a month for 1 user billed annually ($49 monthly), and Connect is $149 for up to 5 users billed annually, adding reminders, automatic payments and QuickBooks sync (prices read from an archived copy of its pricing page). Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.8 from about 21,300 ratings. It is second because three people need Connect at $149 where ServiceM8 charges $79 for 150 jobs a month for any headcount, there is no free plan, annual plans are paid up front and not refunded, and crew scheduling needs Plus at $399.

    Housecall Pro

    Free trial · from $59/mo

For: Crews that want a price book and job costing from the start

Housecall Pro covers online booking from Google or your own site, scheduling and dispatch, estimates, invoices, card and bank payments, a price book and job costing, with a crew app in English and Spanish. Basic is $59 a month for 1 user billed annually ($79 monthly), and Essentials is $149 for up to 5 users, adding routes, flat-rate pricing, GPS tracking, commissions and QuickBooks Online sync. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.7 from about 31,000 ratings. It is third because one user costs $59 to Jobber's $29 billed annually, route optimization, service plans and the API need Max at $299, and AI call answering and payroll are add-ons with no listed price.

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 16

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where field service apps land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 16

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 0

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • ServiceM8

  • Jobber

  • Contractor Foreman

The plain part of Contractor Foreman you could make: quotes and estimates, invoicing, job scheduling, Gantt & timelines, time tracking and reports. What surrounds it you could not. The 3 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
