Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

20

lead and email finders we grade, from their own pages

Look up someone's work email or phone number, or build a list of people at the companies you sell to.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about lead and email finders, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

We grade 20 lead and email finders

13 of them are free or have a free plan, and 6 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $39 a month in the middle

From $26.89 (Dropcontact) to $167 (Clay), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

    Best value: ContactOut and Dropcontact

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

0 of 20 have iPhone and Android apps

20 run in a web browser and 0 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.6

0 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is Clay, at 2.8.

  6. 6

    Best free option: Clay

Clay has the highest GPA of the free ones, 2.8. Data enrichment tables that query 150+ data providers in one place.

  7. 7

13 worth keeping, 3 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 13 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 3 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 4 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three lead and email finders we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    2.8GPA

    Hunter

    Free plan · from $34/mo

For: Most people looking for work email addresses

Hunter finds the addresses people use at work, for one named person or for everyone it has at a company domain, and checks whether each will accept mail. The free plan gives 50 credits a month, and Starter is $34 a month for 2,000 credits, billed annually ($49 monthly), shared by unlimited team members. It runs on the web with Chrome and Firefox extensions and a Google Sheets add-on, and it can send cold email sequences too. Know the limits: it finds email addresses only, with no phone lookups, and credits do not roll over on monthly billing.

    2.8GPA

    Snov.io

    Free plan · from $29.25/mo

For: Small teams that want phone numbers and outreach on one cheap bill

Snov.io finds and verifies work emails, searches a prospect database, pulls verified phone numbers with enrichment tokens and sends email campaigns with mailbox warm-up, all with unlimited seats. Starter is $29.25 a month for 1,000 credits and 75 enrichment tokens, billed annually ($39 monthly), and the free plan renews 50 credits every 30 days. It is second because it gives fewer lookups and has more to learn: Starter gives half Hunter's credits, use is split across credits, recipients and tokens, LinkedIn automation costs $59 a month more per LinkedIn account, and its billing FAQ rules out refunds.

  3. 3rd

    2.4GPA

    Apollo.io

    Free plan · from $49/mo

For: Sales reps who need phone numbers from a large database

Apollo.io searches about 240 million contacts and 30 million companies, reveals a work email for 1 credit and a phone number for 8, and runs email sequences and a US dialer from the same account, with a Chrome extension for LinkedIn and Gmail. The free plan gives 900 credits per seat a year, granted monthly, and Basic is $49 per seat a month, billed annually, with 30,000 credits a seat a year. It is third because a team costs more: every seat is paid for and all must be on the same plan, unused credits expire each billing cycle, and the web app takes longer to learn.

Part 03 · Pricing

What they cost

What paid plans start at, the best buy at each budget and the free plans

$39

A month to start, in the middle of those that charge

Going by our grades, ContactOut and Dropcontact give the most for the money among lead and email finders: no tool on this chart scores higher without costing more.

Paid plans start at a middle price of $39 a month across the 15 that charge, from $26.89 (Dropcontact) to $167 (Clay).

1 of the 15 score above the category's average while starting at or below its middle price. 5 cost more than the middle price and score below the average.

Part 05 · Keep or make

    Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

    3

Simple enough to make yourself, of 20

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where lead and email finders land, by the same rules for every tool.

    • 13

      Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

    • 4

      Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

    • 3

      You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

    Worth keeping

    • Clay

To replace Clay you would be making connections to other products, each kept working as those products change. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

    • GetProspect

To replace GetProspect you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

    • Hunter

To replace Hunter you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

    • Snov.io

To replace Snov.io you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

    You could make these yourself

    • Anymail Finder$348 a year
    • Skrapp$348 a year
    • Dropcontact$322.73 a year

What each costs a year on its cheapest paid plan, which is what making your own would save. A judgement from each listing; nothing was built to test it.
