Who each one suits

Docmost

  • Teams moving from Confluence or Notion to a self-hosted wiki
  • Regulated or air-gapped environments

DokuWiki

  • Small teams that want a wiki without running a database

  • Internal documentation that needs access controls at no cost

Worth knowing

Docmost

  • The pricing page covers self-managed editions only: you deploy and run Docmost on your own infrastructure.
  • The Business edition has a 10-seat minimum and is priced on annual billing; no monthly price is shown.
  • SSO, MFA, AI, Bases, Kanban, templates and page-level permissions are not in the free Open Source edition.
  • SCIM, audit logs, SIEM and the page verification workflow are limited to Enterprise, which has custom pricing.

DokuWiki

  • You install and host it yourself on a web server with PHP. The download page points to partners that offer hosting with DokuWiki pre-installed.
  • Pages are written in DokuWiki's own formatting syntax, which editors have to learn.
  • The bundled web server option is for 64-bit Windows and is recommended for personal, single-user use only.
  • Help comes from the community forum and mailing list; the author asks not to be contacted directly for support.

Key features

Docmost

Real-time collaborative editor
Several people edit the same page at once with live cursors. The editor has a slash menu, @ mentions, tables, code blocks, math equations and Markdown shortcuts.
Spaces and permissions
Unlimited spaces separate content by team, project or department, each with its own permissions and groups. Page-level permissions need the Business edition.
Built-in diagrams
Draw.io, Excalidraw and Mermaid diagrams are created inside a page, and all three are included in the free Open Source edition.
AI search, chat and MCP
Business and Enterprise add AI answers grounded in your pages with source citations, running on a self-hosted or cloud LLM, and can expose the wiki as an MCP server.
Bases and Kanban
Bases organize content as structured databases with properties, filters, sorts and formulas, in table and Kanban views. They are part of the Business edition.
Import and export
Pages import from Markdown, HTML and Notion and export to Markdown and HTML on every edition. Confluence, DOCX and PDF import need Business.

DokuWiki

No database required
DokuWiki runs without a database server, which the project presents as the reason it is easy for administrators to maintain, back up and integrate.
Plain-text wiki syntax
Pages are written in a readable formatting syntax that covers headings, links, lists, tables, footnotes and media files, with syntax highlighting for code blocks.
Access controls and authentication
Built-in access controls and authentication connectors decide who can read or edit, which the project highlights as useful in an enterprise setting.
Plugins
Hundreds of plugins are available. The download page can bundle popular ones, such as CAPTCHA, Upgrade, Wrap, Translation and Gallery, into the package.
Feeds and interwiki links
A page can pull in data from external RSS and Atom feeds, and interwiki links give quick links to pages on other wikis such as Wikipedia.
Languages and a portable option
The interface comes in dozens of languages, and an optional download adds a minimal Windows web server with PHP for trying DokuWiki or running it from a USB stick.
