Who each one suits

GitBook

  • Public product and API documentation for software companies
  • Teams that want docs reviewed and merged in a Git workflow
  • Open source projects, which can apply for the free Community plan

Gramax

  • Teams that want documentation kept as Markdown files in their own Git repository
  • Product and developer documentation published as a reader portal
  • Companies with many readers and few authors, since only editors need a license

Worth knowing

GitBook

  • Paid plans combine a per-site fee with $12 per user / month, and guests and read-only members cost the same as other members.
  • The pricing page shows annual-billing prices and advertises 2 months free; month-to-month rates are not shown in its default view.
  • The Free plan covers a single user and leaves out custom domains, AI search and AI writing.
  • SAML SSO is limited to Enterprise; the AI Assistant, adaptive content and authenticated access need Ultimate at $249 per site / month.

Gramax

  • Corporate SSO, admin-panel access management, analytics, training tests and portal notifications are limited to Enterprise Server.
  • Enterprise Server has a 10-license minimum, so the smallest purchase is $200 a month or $7,000 one-time.
  • In the open-source version the AI agent and AI search run on a model you supply.
  • Sharing work between people depends on a Git storage, and the docs list browser and desktop versions but no mobile apps.

Key features

GitBook

Block-based editor
A visual editor built from blocks, including custom ones. Added users collaborate through change requests and content reviews before edits are published.
Git Sync
Two-way sync with GitHub or GitLab lets a team branch, review and merge documentation like a pull request. It is included on every plan, the Free one too.
Published docs sites
Sites get unlimited traffic and preview deployments on every plan. Custom domains, branding and redirects start on Premium; sections and site groups need Ultimate.
AI search and Assistant
On Premium, readers get short answers straight from the search box. Ultimate adds the Assistant, a chat sidebar that can also draw on connected sources such as GitHub and Slack.
GitBook Agent
Writes, edits and updates documentation and flags content that no longer matches the product. Free accounts are limited to 10 messages a week.
API docs and LLM-ready output
OpenAPI specifications become interactive API playgrounds. Every site also gets llms.txt files, Markdown versions of pages and its own MCP server.

Gramax

Visual editor over Markdown and Git
Articles are edited visually and saved as Markdown files. Syncing and publishing run on Git commands built into the interface, against GitHub, GitLab, Gitea or another Git storage.
Documentation portal
Catalogs are published as a site for readers through Gramax Cloud, a Docker container on your own server or a static site. Portals and readers are unlimited in both versions.
Diagrams, templates and fragments
Articles can include Diagrams.net, Mermaid and PlantUML diagrams, start from article templates and reuse fragments of content across articles.
Versions and change approval
Catalogs keep versions and a change history, and an edit proposed by an author or the AI agent is reviewed line by line before it is accepted.
AI search and AI agent
Readers ask a question and get an answer with links to the source articles, and the agent flags duplicates and conflicts. The free version runs on your own model; Enterprise needs no model setup.
Training and metrics
Enterprise Server adds questions inside articles with test results per employee, plus visit history, search queries and click-through rates for finding gaps.
