| Value for money | CEnterprise Server is $20 per Editor license a month, above the $13 or so that's typical here, and the minimum is 10 licenses. So the smallest purchase is $200 a month, or $7,000 one-time. Readers don't need a license, which softens it. | A$10 a month for the whole team, up to 10 members, with SSO, AI answers, the API and the audit log all in. Most rivals charge about that per person. The next tier, 11 to 100 members, is $79, and that's still a flat fee. |
| Free plan and trial | AThe Open Source version is free with no license: visual editor, diagrams, templates, versions, PDF and DOCX export, browser and desktop apps, and unlimited portals and readers. AI is in there too, on a model you supply. | BThe self-hosted Community Edition is $0 with unlimited docs, real-time editing, SSO and the API, but no AI answers, guest users or support. On the cloud there's no free plan: you get 30 days, then the workspace turns read-only until you add a payment method. |
| Features | AA visual editor over Markdown and Git, three kinds of diagram, reusable fragments, versions with line-by-line change review, and AI search that links to its source articles. Enterprise adds training tests and reader metrics. | AA Markdown editor with slash commands and embeds, live co-editing with comments and threads, workspace search with AI answers, groups and permissions, public sharing on your own domain, and unlimited documents and version history on every tier. |
| Ease of use | CNo app rating on record. Writers get a visual editor, but sharing work between people depends on a Git storage such as GitHub or GitLab, so there are accounts to wire together before a team can use it. | BNo app rating on record. The cloud version means no server to run, and the editor takes Markdown and slash commands. Self-hosting is there if you want it, and that's a bigger job. |
| Platforms and integrations | BA browser version plus desktop apps for Mac, Windows and Linux, and it syncs with GitHub, GitLab and Gitea. The docs list no mobile apps. | BWeb plus desktop apps for macOS and Windows, with more than 20 integrations including Slack, Figma, GitHub and Zapier, and an API with webhooks on every tier. No mobile apps are listed. |
| Best for | docs kept as Markdown files in your own Git | a Markdown-friendly team wiki at a flat price |

Who each one suits
Gramax
- Teams that want documentation kept as Markdown files in their own Git repository
- Product and developer documentation published as a reader portal
- Companies with many readers and few authors, since only editors need a license
Outline
- Teams that want a fast, Markdown-friendly internal wiki
- Organizations that need to host their knowledge base themselves
- Small teams: cloud hosting is a flat $10 a month for up to 10 members
Worth knowing
Gramax
- Corporate SSO, admin-panel access management, analytics, training tests and portal notifications are limited to Enterprise Server.
- Enterprise Server has a 10-license minimum, so the smallest purchase is $200 a month or $7,000 one-time.
- In the open-source version the AI agent and AI search run on a model you supply.
- Sharing work between people depends on a Git storage, and the docs list browser and desktop versions but no mobile apps.
Outline
- The cloud version has no free plan: after the 30-day trial the workspace is read-only until a payment method is added.
- Cloud pricing goes by team-size tier, so an 11th member moves a team from $10 to $79 a month, and teams over 200 need a quote.
- The free Community Edition lacks AI answers, guest users, SAML 2.0 and the audit log; paid self-hosted licenses need at least 10 users.
- The download page offers desktop apps for macOS and Windows only; no mobile apps are listed.
Key features
Gramax
- Visual editor over Markdown and Git
- Articles are edited visually and saved as Markdown files. Syncing and publishing run on Git commands built into the interface, against GitHub, GitLab, Gitea or another Git storage.
- Documentation portal
- Catalogs are published as a site for readers through Gramax Cloud, a Docker container on your own server or a static site. Portals and readers are unlimited in both versions.
- Diagrams, templates and fragments
- Articles can include Diagrams.net, Mermaid and PlantUML diagrams, start from article templates and reuse fragments of content across articles.
- Versions and change approval
- Catalogs keep versions and a change history, and an edit proposed by an author or the AI agent is reviewed line by line before it is accepted.
- AI search and AI agent
- Readers ask a question and get an answer with links to the source articles, and the agent flags duplicates and conflicts. The free version runs on your own model; Enterprise needs no model setup.
- Training and metrics
- Enterprise Server adds questions inside articles with test results per employee, plus visit history, search queries and click-through rates for finding gaps.
Outline
- Markdown-friendly editor
- The editor supports Markdown, slash commands and interactive embeds. Documents and their version history are unlimited on every tier, including the free Community Edition.
- Real-time collaboration
- Several people can edit a document at the same time, and comments, threads and @mentions keep the discussion attached to the text.
- Search and AI answers
- Search covers the whole workspace, and questions about your documents get direct AI answers. AI answers are in every cloud tier but need a paid license when self-hosting.
- Permissions and public sharing
- Read and write permissions, user groups and guest users control access. Documents can be shared publicly by link, with your own brand colors, logo and domain.
- Self-hosting
- Outline can run on your own infrastructure, either as the free Community Edition or with a paid Business or Enterprise license that adds features such as SAML 2.0.
- Integrations and API
- More than 20 integrations cover tools such as Slack, Figma, GitHub, GitLab and Zapier, and an API with webhooks is included on every tier.
