Part 01 · Overview

Welcome

What these tools do, how many we grade and what to know before choosing

31

website and landing page builders we grade, from their own pages

Make a site, a portfolio or a landing page without code, with the hosting included.

Before you choose, here are 7 things to know about website and landing page builders, worked out from every one we grade.

  1. 1

We grade 31 website and landing page builders

17 of them are free or have a free plan, and 12 more let you try before paying. Everything in this guide comes from their own pages and our grades.

  2. 2

Paid plans start at $14 a month in the middle

From $0.75 (Carrd) to $81 (ClickFunnels), going by what each one's paid plans start at.

  3. 3

    Best value: WordPress.com and Carrd

Nothing on our chart scores higher than these without costing more.

  4. 4

3 of 31 have iPhone and Android apps

31 run in a web browser and 2 have a Windows app. Check the one you need before you fall for anything.

  5. 5

    The middle GPA is 2.2

1 score 3.0 or higher. The highest is WordPress.com, at 3.4.

  6. 6

    Best free option: WordPress.com

WordPress.com has the highest GPA of the free ones, 3.4. Hosted WordPress with themes, plugins and a free plan.

  7. 7

28 worth keeping, 0 you could make

By our keep-or-make rules, 28 do something you couldn't reasonably build yourself, 0 are simple enough to make with an AI app builder, and 3 are a close call.

Part 02 · Top three

Our top three

The three we'd look at first, and who each one suits

The three website and landing page builders we'd look at first. First place suits the most people; second and third are the best picks for the people it leaves out. Each has an Insider's Guide of its own.

  1. 1st

    3.4GPA

    WordPress.com

    Free plan · from $4/mo

For: Most people building a website

WordPress.com is hosted WordPress: themes, the block editor, SSL and a CDN, with no server to run. Personal is $4 a month, billed yearly ($9 monthly), for your own domain, no ads and installs from more than 60,000 plugins, and Premium at $8 adds PayPal and Stripe payment buttons. The free plan keeps a wordpress.com address and shows ads. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.62 from about 22,300 ratings. Know the limits: backups and developer tools need Business at $25 a month, a WooCommerce store needs Commerce at $45, and monthly billing on Personal and Premium costs more than double.

  2. 2nd

    2.8GPA

    Wix

    Free plan · from $17/mo

For: Small businesses that want bookings and a shop built in

Wix starts free and lays out pages with drag and drop or with Aria, an AI agent that turns a written idea into sections you can edit. Its own tools cover a store, bookings, events, restaurant orders and hotel reservations, with an app market for more. Its iPhone and iPad app averages 4.58 from about 16,800 ratings. It is second because a working business site costs more: Light is $17 a month, billed yearly, and takes no payments, so selling or bookings start on Core at $29. Paid plans have no free trial, only a 14-day money-back guarantee.

    The Wix Insider’s Guide
  3. 3rd

    2.6GPA

    Carrd

    Free plan · from $9/yr

For: Anyone who needs one page: a profile, portfolio or landing page

Carrd builds one-page sites from templates that adjust to phones, tablets and desktops, with signup forms that feed about 20 email services and can take payments. Up to 3 sites are free on Carrd addresses, and Pro Standard is $19 a year for up to 10 sites with your own domain, forms and embeds, after a 7-day Pro trial with no card. It is third because it does a smaller job than the two above: there is no multi-page site, blog or online store, and password protection and redirects need Pro Plus at $49 a year.

Part 03 · Pricing

What they cost

What paid plans start at, the best buy at each budget and the free plans

$14

Going by our grades, WordPress.com and Carrd give the most for the money among website and landing page builders: no tool on this chart scores higher without costing more.

Paid plans start at a middle price of $14 a month across the 30 that charge, from $0.75 (Carrd) to $81 (ClickFunnels).

Part 05 · Keep or make

Keep or make?

Which are worth paying for, and which you could make yourself

0

Simple enough to make yourself, of 31

Some software does something you couldn’t reasonably build yourself. Some is simple enough that an AI app builder could make the core of it in an afternoon. Here’s where website and landing page builders land, by the same rules for every tool.

  • 28

    Keep it

It does something you could not reasonably make for yourself, or it costs nothing.

  • 3

    Your call

You could make the core of it, and you would give something up.

  • 0

    You could make this

What it does is the kind of thing an AI app builder makes well, and it charges every month.

Worth keeping

  • WordPress.com

To replace WordPress.com you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Wix

To replace Wix you would be making an AI agent, with the models and the safeguards behind it. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Carrd

To replace Carrd you would be making a builder that other people can use without writing code. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

  • Squarespace

The plain part of Squarespace you could make: templates, forms and invoicing. What surrounds it you could not. The 4 things listed below take a company, not a weekend.
