Value for money
BGrowing is $80 a month billed annually with 5 team members, unlimited readers, a custom domain, GitHub sync and API docs. That's in line with the other docs platforms we list. But versioning and the review system need Scaling at $350, and public API access and PDF export are add-ons at $80 a month each.
C$100 a month covers 1 author and 1 knowledge base, with more at $25 per author and $50 per knowledge base. A custom domain and the developer API wait on Pro at $250, and SAML SSO on Business at $500. Migration and a custom theme are thrown in, to be fair.
Free plan and trial
CNo free plan. You get a 14-day trial with full features and no credit card required, and after that a paid plan is the only way on. Open source projects are offered the Growing plan free, which is a nice touch.
CNo free plan. The trial is a roomy 30 days with no credit card required, and the pricing page says it can be extended for free.
Features
AA multiplayer editor with drafts and branches you merge after review, Markdown or MDX synced from GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket, API docs generated from OpenAPI or Swagger files, and public or private portals on a custom domain. Reusable snippets and variables arrive on Scaling.
AA no-code editor with snippets and versions you can compare and restore, search with synonyms and indexed PDFs, an AI chatbot that answers only from your articles and links to them, reader groups, and built-in reports on searches and content gaps.
Ease of use
BNo App Store rating on record, so a B is our ceiling. It's hosted, so there's no server to run, and the branches work with or without a Git workflow. The menu of plans and add-ons takes some working out, mind.
BNo app rating on record. The editor needs no code, and KnowledgeOwl's team migrates your content, builds the theme and holds regular 1:1 onboarding calls until launch.
Platforms and integrations
BAny modern browser, plus desktop apps for macOS, Windows and Linux. It connects to GitHub, GitLab, Bitbucket, Slack, Jira and Zapier, with Intercom and Zendesk on Enterprise only. No phone apps are listed, and public API access is a paid add-on.
BA web app with integrations for Salesforce, Zendesk, Intercom, Slack, Microsoft Teams and Zapier. The developer API starts on Pro. No phone or desktop apps on record.

Key features

Archbee

Editor with branches and drafts
A multiplayer editor with drafts and native branches lets writers change content in isolation, have it reviewed and merge it when ready, with or without a Git workflow.
Docs-as-code sync
Markdown or MDX kept in GitHub, GitLab or Bitbucket can be built into a docs site, and OpenAPI or Swagger files generate API documentation, on every plan.
Published portals
Spaces can be public or private and published to a custom domain hosted by Archbee. Password protection is on every plan; guest accounts, magic links and JWT start on Scaling.
Reusable content
Variables and reusable snippets update everywhere when changed, and version and space links connect multi-version and multi-product docs. These start on the Scaling plan.
AI add-on
Ask AI answers reader questions from the documentation and Write Assist helps draft content. It is a paid add-on on Growing and Scaling with a monthly token allowance.
Desktop apps and export
Archbee runs in any modern browser and offers macOS, Windows and Linux apps. Content can be exported as Markdown or as rendered PDF files.

KnowledgeOwl

Editor and versioning
A no-code rich text editor with reusable content snippets, article statuses from Draft to Needs Review, and major and minor versions that can be compared and restored.
Search and AI chatbot
Search needs no tagging and includes semantic search, a synonym library and indexed PDF content. The AI chatbot answers only from the knowledge base and links to its source articles.
Reader access controls
Unlimited reader groups decide who can read which content. Remote authentication starts on Pro, and SAML and Salesforce single sign-on on Business.
AI writing help
AI credits cover first drafts and outlines, article summaries, meta descriptions and style guide review: 100 a month on Basic, 500 on Pro and 1,000 on Business.
Owl Analytics
Built-in reports track searches, article performance and content gaps, keeping 45 days of data on Basic, 90 days on Pro and 450 days on Business.
