Value for money
ASolo Deluxe is $4 a month paid annually, for unlimited recording time and hosting plus the full video editor. Most video tools here start at more than double that. Solo Max is $10. Monthly billing costs more than these annual prices.
APro is $4.99 a month billed annually ($59.90), or $8.32 monthly. That's well under what tools here usually charge, and it allows business use on 3 computers with 50 GB of storage and 1080p at 60 FPS. Teams jump to Premium at $49 for 5 seats.
Free plan and trial
BFree forever, with as many recordings as you like and no watermark. But each one stops at 15 minutes, and hosting is capped at 10 videos. You also get 5 video quizzes and 720p playback.
BFree Forever has no watermark and no length limit once you sign in, which is nice. But it's for personal use only, tops out at 720p, and gives 2 GB of storage with 50 recordings, 100 screenshots and 10 instant share links a month.
Features
ARecord a screen, a window or an area with your webcam on top, then cut, crop, add text, music and narration. It takes scrolling screenshots, hosts videos in channels with passwords, and adds quizzes, polls and ratings you can embed in a learning management system. That's the whole job and more.
BScreen recording with webcam, mic and system audio, annotated screenshots, links that are ready when you stop, offline capture, password-protected videos and viewer analytics. Even voice dictation. Solid. But the listing shows no video editor, and 4K waits for Premium.
Ease of use
B4.59 from about 5,400 App Store ratings, a whisker short of an A on our ladder. You can draw and zoom while you record, and there's a recorder for Chrome if you don't want to install anything.
BNo rating is on record to go by, so a B. Recordings upload as they're made, so there's no export-then-upload step: stop, and the link is on your clipboard. Without an account, recording stops at 5 minutes.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Windows, Mac, iPhone, Android and a Chrome extension. It connects to Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Blackboard, YouTube and Google Slides. The image editor with text recognition is listed for Windows and Mac only.
BDesktop apps for Windows, Mac and Linux, which covers most computers. That's all that's offered, though: no phone app, no browser version, and the listing shows no integrations.
