Value for money
BScaling is $8 a user a month billed yearly, or $10 monthly, which is under what's typical here, and AI answers, the Slack bot and the API are all in. But the 10-user minimum sets the floor at ten seats, and SAML SSO and SCIM are paid add-ons unless you go Enterprise.
A$19 a month covers up to 10 users, and that's for the whole team, not each. $49 covers 25 and $99 covers 75, all with the same features and unlimited read-only users. Hard to find a team wiki for less. It's monthly billing only, so there's no annual discount.
Free plan and trial
CNo free plan. The trial is a decent one, though: 30 days with all features included and no credit card required. When it ends, you need a card to carry on.
BOne user can use it free, with the same feature set the paid tiers list. Fine for a wiki you write alone and share read-only. The moment a second person needs to be a user, it's $19 a month, and no trial of the paid tiers is listed.
Features
APages you write or build from Google Docs and Markdown files, a store of answered questions, and Kai answering from all of it in Tettra and Slack. Experts verify pages on a schedule, and reports list what's stale or unowned. Read-only users, guests and page locking round it out.
BIt does one thing and does it fully: Drive folders become a wiki with a nested tree menu, search inside the documents, team or public sharing, a read-only mode and a custom domain alias. Editing and live collaboration come from Google Docs. That's the whole list, though.
Ease of use
BNo rating on record to go by, so a B is as high as we go. It's used in a browser and through Slack, so there's nothing to install, and you can bring in the Google Docs you already have. The interface is English-only.
BNo rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. There's nothing new to learn, since pages are just Google Docs. You do have to share the wiki folder with a You Need A Wiki service account so its server can act on the files.
Platforms and integrations
BWeb only: Tettra's site lists no desktop or mobile apps. It works through Slack and connects to Google Workspace, GitHub and Zapier, with API access on the Scaling plan.
CA web app and nothing else. The only things it connects to are Google Drive and Google Docs, because that's where every page lives. You can embed a wiki in another page as an iframe, and that's about it.

Who each one suits

Tettra

  • Slack-based teams that field the same questions repeatedly
  • Support and operations teams building an internal knowledge base
  • Companies that want to reuse existing Google Docs as a wiki

You Need A Wiki

  • Teams that already keep their documentation in Google Docs
  • Small companies that want a wiki without migrating content to a new tool
  • Publishing a public knowledge base straight from a Drive folder

Worth knowing

Tettra

  • There is no free plan: a card is required once the 30-day trial ends, and the Scaling plan has a 10-user minimum.
  • Single sign-on (SAML) and SCIM provisioning are paid add-ons on Scaling and are included only in Enterprise.
  • The app interface is English-only, although content can be written in any language.
  • Tettra's site lists no desktop or mobile apps; it is used in a browser and through its Slack integration.

You Need A Wiki

  • It depends on Google Drive and Google Docs: all content lives there and editing happens in the Docs editor.
  • The wiki folder has to be shared with a You Need A Wiki service account so its server can act on the files.
  • Only 1 user is free; the next tier is $19 a month for up to 10 users, and teams above 75 users must email for a price.
  • The site shows monthly prices only, with no annual billing option or free trial of the paid tiers listed.

Key features

Tettra

Internal knowledge base
Pages are written in Tettra's editor or built from existing Google Docs, Markdown files and other content, then grouped into categories with unlimited version history.
AI answers from Kai
When someone asks a question in Tettra or Slack, the Kai bot searches the knowledge base and replies. If it finds nothing, it helps assign the question to the right person.
Questions and answers
Questions and their answers are stored alongside pages, so a question that has been answered once can be found again instead of asked again.
Verification and content reports
Subject-matter experts verify pages on a set schedule, teammates can request new pages or updates, and reports list stale, unowned and public content.
Slack integration
From Slack, teammates can search Tettra, get AI answers in channels and direct messages, summarize threads and turn existing answers into knowledge base content.
Sharing and permissions
Single pages can be shared by link and whole categories published as external sites. Read-only users, guest users, invite-only categories and page locking control access.

You Need A Wiki

Wiki from existing Drive folders
Existing Google Drive folders and files are imported into a wiki with a nested tree menu. Changes made in Docs or Drive show up in the wiki, and everything is saved to Drive.
Google Docs as the editor
Pages are edited in Google Docs, so live collaboration, suggestions and formatting come from Docs. The wiki shows who last edited a page.
Search across document content
Search covers the text inside documents. To speed it up, document content is cached for up to a month, which can be turned off in settings.
Team, contact and public sharing
A wiki can be shared with a team or individual contacts or made publicly accessible. Read-only users are unlimited, and a read-only mode guards against accidental edits.
Custom domain and embedding
The plans list a custom domain alias, a custom sidebar color and the option to embed a wiki in another page as an iframe.
