Square Invoices report card

2.8GPA

Best for free invoicing for businesses already on Square

Square Invoices sends unlimited invoices, estimates and contracts for nothing a month, and your customers can pay just about any way, from cards to Afterpay. You pay Square per payment instead, 3.3% + 30¢ on an online card. It keeps no books, though, so you'll want QuickBooks Online or Xero alongside it.

Who Square Invoices is for

  • Great if you already take payments in person with Square
  • Handy when you send estimates and contracts before billing the job
  • Good for service businesses that want to invoice without a monthly fee

Who Square Invoices is not for

  • Too light for keeping the books, as it only sends payments on to QuickBooks Online or Xero
  • Pricey if you go for Plus just for lower fees, at $49 a month for each location
  • Not for you if you bill clients in other currencies, since it takes one currency only

Why Square Invoices gets a 2.8

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • DValue for moneyPlus is $49 a location a month, where the dearest tenth of accounting tools starts. For invoicing it mostly buys a lower card fee, 2.9% instead of 3.3%, plus batch invoices and payment schedules. That fee cut only pays for itself past about $12,000 a month in card payments.
  • AFree plan and trialUnlimited invoices, recurring invoices, deposits, reminders, estimates and contracts cost nothing a month, with no cap. You pay per payment instead: 3.3% + 30¢ on an online card, and 1% on a bank transfer.
  • CFeaturesInvoices on any schedule, deposits, auto-pay, estimates, e-signed contracts, a project workspace and cards, Cash App Pay, ACH or Afterpay. It does invoicing fully, but that's the smaller job: it keeps no books and takes one currency only.
  • AEase of use4.8 from 93,229 App Store ratings, the top band in this category. If you already take payments with Square, invoices sit in the same account.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb, iPhone and Android, with QuickBooks Online, Xero, Afterpay, Cash App Pay, Apple Pay and Google Pay. There's no desktop app, which keeps it off an A.
