Who each one suits
FlowSavvy
- Individuals who want tasks placed on the calendar without manual time blocking
- Deadline-driven workloads that shift often during the week
- People who already keep events in Google, Outlook.com or iCloud calendars
Shovel
- College students planning a full semester of readings, assignments and exams
- Students whose school uses Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle or Google Classroom
- Students who want a warning before they run short of study time
Worth knowing
FlowSavvy
- Basic schedules only 2 weeks ahead and is limited to 3 repeating auto-scheduled tasks, 5 task lists and 1 set of scheduling hours.
- Priority levels, task dependencies, syncing tasks out to other calendars, and the API, MCP and Zapier integrations all require Pro.
- There is no native desktop app. On a computer it runs in the browser or as an installed progressive web app.
- The vendor aims it at individuals and does not offer team or enterprise features.
Shovel
- There is no free plan. Access needs a paid subscription once the 7-day trial ends.
- The phone apps are companions: an account has to be set up in the web app first, and the vendor says not to use the mobile app on tablets.
- On computers and tablets Shovel is installed from the browser as a progressive web app, not as a native desktop program.
- The US App Store lists two "Lifetime plan" in-app purchases, at $13.99 and $46.99, that the website's pricing page does not mention.
Key features
FlowSavvy
- Auto-scheduling
- Places tasks into open time on the calendar based on due dates and durations, and can split a task around events. Basic plans 2 weeks ahead and Pro 8 weeks.
- Automatic rescheduling
- The schedule is rebuilt whenever an event or task changes, and a Recalculate button puts missed tasks back on the calendar. Reschedules are unlimited on both plans.
- Scheduling hours
- Sets of hours such as work or personal define when tasks may be scheduled. Basic includes one set; Pro allows unlimited profiles.
- Calendar sync
- Two-way sync with Google Calendar, Outlook.com and iCloud on both plans. Writing FlowSavvy tasks back to those calendars is a Pro feature.
- Priorities and dependencies
- Pro adds priority levels and dependency chains for tasks that must follow an order. On the free plan, tasks are prioritized by due date.
- Task app sync, API and MCP
- Syncs tasks with Todoist, Google Tasks, Microsoft To Do and Apple Reminders. A public API, an MCP server for ChatGPT and Claude, and Zapier are Pro-only.
Shovel
- Syllabus upload and school sync
- AI Syllabus Upload turns a PDF syllabus into tasks and events, and courses can sync live with Canvas, Brightspace, Moodle or Google Classroom.
- Planning tasks into study time
- Each task is assigned to specific study blocks, so a due date becomes a plan for what to work on, when and for how long.
- The Cushion
- Compares the study time available before each deadline with the time the task is estimated to need, and plots every task above or below a zero line.
- Schedule of available time
- Classes, activities, meals and personal time are blocked out to reveal the hours left for studying. Events can repeat every set number of weeks.
- Time estimates and timer
- Reading time is calculated per task, exam and assignment estimates can be adjusted as work progresses, and a built-in timer records time spent on each task.
- External calendars
- Google, Apple and Outlook calendar events can be shown inside Shovel, and the Shovel calendar can be shared out to those calendars.
