Value for money
BLite is $6.99 a month on the yearly plan and only $7.99 monthly, a bit under the typical price here. It covers 16 hours of Pro meetings a month. Unlimited hours for one person is $16.99, though, and Teams is $12 a seat with a 5-seat minimum.
B$89 a year works out at about $7.40 a month, a little under the typical price here, and $9 pays month by month. Either way it's the full app with nothing metered. Or pay $189 once for a lifetime licence, which is a bit over a year and a half of a typical subscription in this category.
Free plan and trial
BUnlimited local recordings and transcripts with speakers identified, free for good, plus a local MCP server. But it won't generate the AI notes, which is the part most people come for. Sync, backup and the phone app are paid too.
CNo free plan. You get 10 hours of recording with every feature, and no account or credit card is needed. After that, new recordings need a paid plan, though you can still search, export and summarise what you've already recorded.
Features
AIt records your mic and your computer's audio with no bot, so Zoom, Teams, Meet, FaceTime and a meeting in a room all work. Transcription is on the device in 29 languages. Pro writes live minutes, decisions and action items, with templates and automations. Audio only, no video.
BIt transcribes on the device, records both sides of a call with no bot, starts by itself when a Zoom, Teams or Meet call begins, and learns voices over time. Summaries come from a built-in model or your own Claude or OpenAI key, and dictation works in any app. But nothing syncs.
Ease of use
BIt's a desktop app that listens to your computer, with no bot to invite, and recording works offline. There's no App Store rating on record to show how people get on with it, so a B.
BNo account to make, and it can start recording by itself when it spots a call or a calendar event. There's no rating on record to show how people get on with it, so a B.
Platforms and integrations
AMac, Windows, iPhone and Android, and it sends notes to Slack, Notion, Todoist and CRMs, with a local MCP server for Claude and Cursor. Two caveats: the phone apps are companions that need a paid plan and the desktop app, and the Mac app needs Apple Silicon.
BMac and Windows, with Apple and Google calendars, export to Obsidian, Markdown and PDF, webhooks and an MCP server. The Mac needs macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon. There are no mobile, web or Linux apps.

Who each one suits

Quill Meetings

  • Professionals whose conversations cannot be sent to a cloud notetaker
  • People who want free, unlimited local transcription
  • Teams that want to choose which AI model reads their transcripts

talat

  • People who cannot send meeting audio to a cloud service
  • Buyers who prefer a one-time lifetime license to a subscription
  • Obsidian and Markdown users who want meeting notes exported automatically

Worth knowing

Quill Meetings

  • Without Pro, Quill does not auto-generate AI notes, and encrypted sync and backup and the mobile app are unavailable.
  • Lite includes 16 hours of pro meetings a month. Unlimited hours need the Unlimited or Teams plan, and Teams has a 5-seat minimum.
  • The iPhone and Android apps are companions that need a paid plan and the desktop app. There is no iPad app and no recording from a browser.
  • The Mac app needs Apple Silicon and macOS 12 or later, and cloud sync covers transcripts and notes but not audio recordings.

talat

  • The Mac version needs macOS 15 or later on Apple Silicon, and Windows needs version 10 or later. There are no mobile, web or Linux apps.
  • After the 10 free hours, new recordings need a paid plan, though existing meetings can still be searched, exported and summarized.
  • Nothing syncs or uploads, so notes stay on the one computer where they were recorded.
  • Summaries from a cloud model require your own provider account and API key; the vendor notes that cloud models usually do better on longer meetings.

Key features

Quill Meetings

Bot-free local recording
Captures your microphone and the computer's audio, so it works with Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Slack huddles, Webex, FaceTime and in-person meetings. It records audio only, not video.
On-device transcription
Transcribes 29 languages with auto-detection on your computer and identifies speakers, learning who is who across meetings. Recording and transcription work without internet.
Live Minutes and AI notes
Pro builds minutes while the meeting is under way, then lists decisions, action items, owners and follow-up drafts. Templates can be set per meeting type.
Your choice of LLM
Notes can run on Anthropic, OpenAI or Google models, AWS Bedrock, OpenRouter, or local models through Ollama or LM Studio. Pro also includes a quota on Quill's hosted model.
AI chat and MCP server
Ask questions across past conversations in the app, or connect Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients to a server that runs locally.
Automations and integrations
After a meeting Quill can create notes, draft an email or send notes to Slack, Notion, a CRM or a folder. To-dos sent to Todoist become separate tasks.

talat

On-device transcription
Speech is transcribed in real time on the computer, using hardware acceleration where available. Recordings, transcripts and notes sit in a local database, and the app works offline.
Bot-free meeting capture
talat records the microphone and system audio as two streams and can start on its own when it detects a Zoom, Teams or Meet call or a calendar event. No bot joins the meeting.
Speaker identification
Transcripts are labeled by speaker on the device, and the app learns voices over time so that it can recognize the same people in later meetings.
AI notes with a choice of model
Summaries, action items and chapters are written by a built-in Qwen model, or by Claude, OpenAI or Ollama if you connect your own provider and API key.
Dictation into any app
A global hotkey starts dictation from anywhere, with tap-to-toggle or hold-to-talk. Text is pasted into the focused app, and an optional LLM pass tidies punctuation and filler words.
Import, export and MCP
Existing audio and video files can be imported and transcribed locally. Notes export to Markdown, Obsidian and PDF, and webhooks and an MCP server pass meetings to other tools.
