Who each one suits

Timelines

  • People who want to see a day or week as colored blocks on a timeline
  • Apple Watch users who start and stop timers from the wrist
  • Tracking personal time and habits rather than client billing

Timing

  • Mac users who want time recorded without starting timers
  • Freelancers who bill clients from a record of apps and documents used
  • People who want tracked data kept on their own Mac by default

Worth knowing

Timelines

  • The free version tracks up to 3 categories; sync, goals, the bar chart, subcategories and Apple Health import need Timelines PRO.
  • It runs only on Apple devices: iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and Vision Pro. An Android version is offered only as a waitlist.
  • There is no native Mac app; the press kit says the app can be used on Macs with Apple silicon and that a native one is planned.
  • It is built as a personal tracker, and the vendor's pages describe no team accounts or invoicing.

Timing

  • The tracker runs only on macOS; phones and other computers are limited to the web app.
  • There is no free plan: a subscription is needed after the 30-day trial.
  • Each seat covers a set number of personal Macs: 1 on Professional, 2 on Expert and 3 on Connect.
  • Team features, the Web API, Zapier and MCP integration are limited to the Connect plan.

Key features

Timelines

Interactive timeline
Tracked events appear as colored markers on a timeline you pan and pinch, from hours up to weeks and months. Any set of timelines can be shown or hidden to focus on one area.
Timers and editable entries
Timers start and stop from the app, a widget or the watch. Events can be added afterwards, given a name and notes, and have their start and end times corrected.
Statistics and exports
One tap turns the visible interval into a pie chart with a time summary per category. PRO adds a bar chart of trends over time and detailed PDF and CSV exports.
Goals
Daily, weekly or monthly time targets can be set per category, such as 20 minutes of language practice a day, with progress tracking and periodic reports. Goals are part of PRO.
Apple Watch app
Timers are controlled from the wrist, with watch face complications, dictation for event names and the digital crown for correcting times. It works without a phone connection.
Widgets, Shortcuts and Health import
Home and Lock Screen widgets and a Live Activity show goals, charts and the running timer. Siri Shortcuts automate timers, and PRO imports workouts, sleep and meditation from Apple Health.

Timing

Automatic tracking
Records the apps, documents and websites used on the Mac without timers. Private and incognito browser tabs are discarded, and an exclusion list keeps chosen items out.
Timeline and rules
An interactive timeline shows the day's activity and lets you add offline time. Option-dragging an activity onto a project creates a rule that assigns similar work from then on.
Calls, meetings and Screen Time
Tracks time spent on phone calls, meetings and calendar events, prompts you when a video or voice call ends, and can import mobile app usage from Screen Time.
AI summaries and MCP
AI summaries group related activities and highlight the main topics of a day. The Connect plan adds MCP integration so an AI agent can work with your time data.
Reports for billing
Timesheets export as PDF, XLSX, CSV or HTML, with rounding and billing status tracking. A GrandTotal integration passes tracked time to that invoicing app.
Web app and teams
A web app syncs with the Mac app and can be installed on a phone to start and stop timers. On Connect, teams share projects and admins review members' times.
