Best for managers who want proof of work from remote staff

Hubstaff is time tracking for bosses who want to see the work: while the timer runs it can take screenshots and log activity levels and the apps and sites in use, then pay people from their tracked hours. Is it cheap? The $4.99 Starter price looks it, but the good bits are on dearer plans or sold as add-ons, and there's no free plan.

Who Hubstaff is for

  • Great if you manage a remote team and want screenshots and activity data as proof of work
  • Handy when you pay contractors straight from their tracked hours
  • Good for field teams that need location tracking and geofenced job sites

Who Hubstaff is not for

  • Skip it if you want a free plan, as free use ends with the 14-day trial
  • Pricey if you need integrations and payroll, because those mean Team at $10 a seat
  • Not for you if you work alone, since the plans have a 2-seat minimum

Why Hubstaff gets a 3.0

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • CValue for moneyStarter is $4.99 a seat a month billed annually, with a 2-seat minimum. Sounds cheap. But it has no integrations and 500 screenshots a seat. Unlimited screenshots, app and URL tracking and payroll need Team at $10, and Insights and Locations cost extra on top.
  • CFree plan and trialNo free plan. Hubstaff's FAQ says free use is limited to the 14-day trial, which needs no credit card. After that you're paying for at least 2 seats.
  • AFeaturesA timer on desktop, web and mobile, with screenshots, activity levels and app and URL tracking. Timesheets, client invoices, project budgets, payroll and GPS job sites round it out. It covers the whole job, even if the plans slice it up.
  • BEase of use4.5 from about 1,500 App Store ratings, just under our A line. Staff press start on a timer and the timesheet fills itself in.
  • APlatforms and integrationsWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension. Jira, Asana, Trello, Slack, GitHub, QuickBooks and PayPal connect, and there's a public API. Mind that Starter comes with no integrations and Grow with 1.
