Who each one suits
Noko
- Small agencies and consultancies that invoice for hours
- Developers who log time from commit messages
- Mac and iPhone users who want a menu bar timer
Tick
- Agencies tracking hours against fixed time budgets
- Growing teams that want pricing by project count, not headcount
- Teams that manage their projects in Basecamp
Worth knowing
Noko
- The plans page lists no free plan; the help center describes a free account with 1 user and 1 project, set up by emailing support.
- Essential has no invoicing, entry approval starts on Team and the entry audit log needs Organization.
- Team is priced for 5 users at $49 a month and Organization for 25 at $199, even if fewer people use it.
- There is no native Android or Windows app; Android phones use the mobile web app.
Tick
- Tick's pricing page is behind a bot check and was not read; prices here come from its comparison pages, which give no plan names or exact project limits.
- Tick tracks time budgets only: the help center says it does not track expenses or work with dollar amounts.
- There is no built-in invoicing; time and billable rates are pushed to QuickBooks Online to create invoices there.
- A Mac menu bar app is listed, but no Windows or Linux desktop app.
Key features
Noko
- Fast entry with projects and tags
- Time is logged from any page against a project, with tags to categorize the work. A new client's project can be created while logging the entry.
- Timers that follow you
- A timer started in the browser carries over to the Mac menu bar app or the iPhone app, and timers have keyboard shortcuts.
- Billing increments and unbillable time
- Timers and entries round up automatically to the increment you set. Unbillable time is tracked separately to show client and project overhead.
- Invoicing
- Invoices are generated from logged time in multiple currencies, with expenses or credits added. Clients can pay through Stripe or PayPal.
- Reports and exports
- Reports show who is working on what and how often, can be shared with a client or manager, and download as CSV, Excel or PDF.
- Developer integrations and API
- Developers can log time from GitHub or Beanstalk commit messages. Projects sync from Basecamp, and a REST API and Zapier connect other tools.
Tick
- Timecard
- Entering time takes three steps: pick a project, organized by client, pick a task, and enter the hours. Notes can be added to each entry.
- Running timers
- Start one timer or switch between several as you move between tasks, then save the time from the timer. Timers run on phone, watch, desktop and browser.
- Budget feedback on every entry
- Projects and individual tasks each carry a time budget. After an entry is saved, Tick shows how many hours remain in both, without running a report.
- Recurring projects
- A monthly project such as a retainer can be set to recur: it closes at the end of the month and a new one opens. The help center marks this as available on select plans.
- Reports and exports
- Reports show hours by client or by person for a week, month or custom period, expand to individual entries, and export as CSV or to QuickBooks.
- Basecamp integration
- Imports projects from a Basecamp account, creates tasks from Basecamp to-dos automatically, and lets people track time inside Basecamp 2 or 3.
