Who each one suits

Harvest

  • Agencies and consultancies that bill clients for tracked hours
  • Solo freelancers with up to 2 active projects, on the free plan
  • Teams that sync invoices and payments to QuickBooks Online or Xero

Tick

  • Agencies tracking hours against fixed time budgets
  • Growing teams that want pricing by project count, not headcount
  • Teams that manage their projects in Basecamp

Worth knowing

Harvest

  • The free plan is limited to 1 seat and 2 projects.
  • Paid prices are shown as starting prices: the pricing page says additional invoices, projects, clients and tasks are billed based on use.
  • Timesheet approvals, profitability reporting and SAML-based SSO need the Enterprise plan.
  • No Linux desktop app is listed, and scheduling needs the separately billed Harvest Forecast.

Tick

  • Tick's pricing page is behind a bot check and was not read; prices here come from its comparison pages, which give no plan names or exact project limits.
  • Tick tracks time budgets only: the help center says it does not track expenses or work with dollar amounts.
  • There is no built-in invoicing; time and billable rates are pushed to QuickBooks Online to create invoices there.
  • A Mac menu bar app is listed, but no Windows or Linux desktop app.

Key features

Harvest

Timers and timesheets
One-click timers, daily and weekly timesheets and calendar imports in the browser, desktop and mobile apps, with automated reminders to submit time.
Invoicing and online payments
Invoices are generated from the tracked time and expenses already in the account, and clients can pay them through the PayPal and Stripe integrations.
Expense tracking
Receipts and reimbursable costs are logged alongside time, so they can be added to the same client invoice.
Budgets and reports
Project budgets update as time is logged. Team capacity and utilization reports start on Teams, and profitability reporting is limited to Enterprise.
Approvals and audit trail
Enterprise adds timesheet approval before hours are billed, an activity log of every time entry and edit, and the option to require notes on entries.
Harvest Forecast
A companion scheduling and capacity planning tool that connects to Harvest. It is billed separately at $5 per person a month on annual billing.

Tick

Timecard
Entering time takes three steps: pick a project, organized by client, pick a task, and enter the hours. Notes can be added to each entry.
Running timers
Start one timer or switch between several as you move between tasks, then save the time from the timer. Timers run on phone, watch, desktop and browser.
Budget feedback on every entry
Projects and individual tasks each carry a time budget. After an entry is saved, Tick shows how many hours remain in both, without running a report.
Recurring projects
A monthly project such as a retainer can be set to recur: it closes at the end of the month and a new one opens. The help center marks this as available on select plans.
Reports and exports
Reports show hours by client or by person for a week, month or custom period, expand to individual entries, and export as CSV or to QuickBooks.
Basecamp integration
Imports projects from a Basecamp account, creates tasks from Basecamp to-dos automatically, and lets people track time inside Basecamp 2 or 3.
