How we grade them

4.0GPAClockifyExcellent3.2GPATickVery good
Value for money
ABasic is $3.99 a seat a month billed annually, or $4.99 monthly, which is under what most time trackers start at. Even Pro, with scheduling, expenses and GPS, is $7.99. Don't hold out for a deal: Clockify says 20% off for annual billing is the only discount.
B$19 a month covers a team running 10 projects, with unlimited users. That's cheap for a team and dear for one freelancer. It climbs to $49 for 30 projects and $149 for 100. These figures come from Tick's comparison pages, as its pricing page couldn't be read.
Free plan and trial
AFree for up to 5 users with no cap on tracked time: timer, timesheet, calendar, auto tracker and Pomodoro timer. A small team could stay here for good. Reports only cover a 1-month range, though, and export as PDF only.
BFree if you're tracking time toward a single project, with unlimited people. One project is a tight limit for most teams, though. Past that there's a 30-day free trial with no credit card.
Features
AA timer, a weekly timesheet, a calendar and an auto tracker that logs the apps and sites you were in. Then a clock-in kiosk, invoicing, time off, approvals, scheduling, expenses and GPS tracking as you go up the plans. That's the whole job.
BQuick time entry, several timers to switch between, and a time budget on every project and task, with the hours left shown as you save. Reports by client or person export to CSV or QuickBooks. But there's no invoicing built in, and it doesn't track expenses or money at all.
Ease of use
A4.6 from about 4,400 App Store ratings. Start a timer or type your hours into a timesheet. There's not much more to it than that.
BWe have no App Store rating on record, so a B is as high as we go. Entering time takes three steps: pick a project, pick a task, enter the hours. You see what's left in the budget without running a report.
Platforms and integrations
AWeb, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, Android and a browser extension. It hooks into Jira, Asana, Trello, QuickBooks, Xero and Zapier, and there's a public API.
AWeb, iOS, Android, a Mac menu bar app and a browser extension, and timers run on a watch too. There's an API, Zapier, Basecamp, Trello, Asana and QuickBooks Online. No Windows or Linux desktop app is listed.

Who each one suits

Clockify

  • Teams of up to 5 that want a free tracker with no cap on tracked time
  • Companies that need timesheets, attendance and approvals for payroll
  • Workplaces with shared devices that need a clock-in kiosk
  • Teams that also want the Pumble and Plaky tools in one bundle

Tick

  • Agencies tracking hours against fixed time budgets
  • Growing teams that want pricing by project count, not headcount
  • Teams that manage their projects in Basecamp

Worth knowing

Clockify

  • The free plan stops at 5 users, limits reports to a 1-month range and exports as PDF only.
  • Invoicing, time off and approvals need Standard; scheduling, expenses, budgets and GPS tracking need Pro.
  • Single sign-on, SCIM and the audit log are limited to Enterprise at $11.99 per seat / month.
  • Clockify states it offers no discounts beyond 20% off for annual billing, and no refunds.

Tick

  • Tick's pricing page is behind a bot check and was not read; prices here come from its comparison pages, which give no plan names or exact project limits.
  • Tick tracks time budgets only: the help center says it does not track expenses or work with dollar amounts.
  • There is no built-in invoicing; time and billable rates are pushed to QuickBooks Online to create invoices there.
  • A Mac menu bar app is listed, but no Windows or Linux desktop app.

Key features

Clockify

Timer, timesheet and calendar
Start and stop a timer, enter hours by hand, fill in a weekly timesheet or block out time on a calendar that shows Outlook and Google Calendar events.
Auto tracker
Records the time you spend in apps, websites and documents on a timeline that only you can see, and lets you turn those records into time entries.
Reports and rates
Summary, detailed and weekly reports break down tracked time. Billable rates start on Basic, and labor cost and profit reports need Pro.
Kiosk
From Basic, staff can clock in with a PIN on a shared device. QR code sign-in is on Standard and photo capture on Pro. Kiosk-only seats start at $0.79 a month, billed annually.
Invoicing, time off and approvals
Standard adds invoices built from tracked time and expenses, time-off policies and balances, and manager approval and locking of timesheets.
Scheduling and location
Pro adds a scheduling timeline for assignments and capacity, project forecasting, expense recording and optional GPS tracking of visited job sites.

Tick

Timecard
Entering time takes three steps: pick a project, organized by client, pick a task, and enter the hours. Notes can be added to each entry.
Running timers
Start one timer or switch between several as you move between tasks, then save the time from the timer. Timers run on phone, watch, desktop and browser.
Budget feedback on every entry
Projects and individual tasks each carry a time budget. After an entry is saved, Tick shows how many hours remain in both, without running a report.
Recurring projects
A monthly project such as a retainer can be set to recur: it closes at the end of the month and a new one opens. The help center marks this as available on select plans.
Reports and exports
Reports show hours by client or by person for a week, month or custom period, expand to individual entries, and export as CSV or to QuickBooks.
Basecamp integration
Imports projects from a Basecamp account, creates tasks from Basecamp to-dos automatically, and lets people track time inside Basecamp 2 or 3.
