Best for email, social posts and events for a small business

Constant Contact puts email, social posts, surveys and event pages in one account for a small business, and its iPhone app is one of the best rated in the category. The catch is the plans: Lite can't even schedule a send, so most people end up on Standard at $29.75 a month. And there's no free plan, only a 30-day trial.

Who Constant Contact is for

  • Great if you run a small business and want email, social posts and event sign-ups in one place
  • Handy when you want to check a campaign's results from your iPhone
  • Good for agencies looking after the marketing of several small clients

Who Constant Contact is not for

  • Pricey if you just want to schedule a newsletter, since that needs the $29.75 Standard plan
  • Skip it if you want a free plan to grow into, as there's only a 30-day trial
  • Tight if your list shrinks after a busy season, as the bill stays at the highest tier you've sent at

Why Constant Contact gets a 2.6

Five grades, each with its reason. The GPA is their average: an A is 4 points, an F is none.

  • DValue for moneyLite is $10.20 a month on yearly billing, which looks cheap. But it can't schedule a send and has 1 automation template. Scheduling and subject-line tests need Standard at $29.75, more than twice what a typical email tool charges, and custom automations need Premium at $68.
  • CFree plan and trialNo free plan. There's a 30-day trial with up to 100 email sends, and it ends on its own rather than rolling into a plan. Enough to try the editor, not to run a real campaign to your list.
  • BFeaturesEmail with AI writing help, automations, segments, landing pages, sign-up forms, surveys, event pages and posting to Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. That's the whole job and a bit more. SMS is a separate monthly add-on.
  • AEase of use4.76 from 10,653 App Store ratings for its iPhone and iPad app, the top band. You can check campaigns, contacts and reports from your phone.
  • BPlatforms and integrationsWeb plus an iPhone and iPad app, and it posts straight to Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn. No Android or desktop app, though, and no API or other integrations on record.

Keep Constant Contact, or make your own?

Keep it

To replace Constant Contact you would be making newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox. That is not a weekend's work, with an AI app builder or without one.

It costs $122.40 a year.

What you could make

  • Forms: an app builder makes this well.

What you could not

  • Newsletters sent to thousands of people that still reach the inbox.
  • Email sent in volume that still reaches the inbox.
  • Texts from a business number, registered with the carriers.
  • A real app for iOS. Something home-made would be a web page.
  • AI features, unless you pay a model provider for each request yourself.
  • The depth: we grade its features B, which means it covers the whole job.

What this rests on. Constant Contact’s listing: what it does, where it runs, what it plugs into and what it costs. It is a judgement about the kind of software this is. We have not built a replacement for it, and making your own means looking after it too. How we decide, and every tool’s verdict.
