Who each one suits

GroupCal

  • Clubs, communities and schools that publish a schedule to many people
  • Small teams sharing shifts, bookings or meeting-room calendars
  • Families and friends on a mix of iPhone and Android phones
  • Groups where only the organizer should pay: members use the app free

Teamup

  • Teams scheduling crews, rooms, equipment or shifts on one shared calendar
  • Sharing a calendar with outside partners or the public through links
  • Groups that prefer a flat price per calendar to per-user billing

Worth knowing

GroupCal

  • A plan covers the calendars its buyer owns, so prices are per calendar owner, not per member; members and admins of those calendars pay nothing.
  • The free plan allows 1 admin and has no permission controls. More admins start at Team ($50 per month, billed annually).
  • The REST API, webhooks and white-labeled apps are limited to Enterprise, which has custom pricing.
  • Accounts are tied to a phone number: the guide says to sign in with the same number on every device.

Teamup

  • The Free plan stops at 5 users, 5 sub-calendars and 1 year of historical data.
  • Prices are per master calendar and each tier caps users: 12 on Plus, 25 on Pro, 50 on Business and 100 on Enterprise.
  • Single sign-on needs an organization account, which starts at US$1,200 per year.
  • Calendars are created and configured in a web browser; the iOS and Android apps provide mobile access to them.

Key features

GroupCal

Calendars joined by link
Create separate calendars for different groups, topics or resources, each with its own color and photo. Members join from a shared link or an invite sent to their phone number, without an email address.
Real-time updates and RSVP
Members get push notifications when they are added to a calendar and when events are added or changed. Each event shows who accepted or declined.
Roles and permissions
Calendars have Owner, Admin and Member roles. Paid plans let the owner choose who can add events or members, and from Team hide event details or limit members to editing their own events.
Personal calendars alongside
Events from Apple Calendar, Google Calendar and Outlook appear next to GroupCal calendars in one view. From Pro, events from connected Google, Outlook and iCloud accounts can be shared with a group.
Public channels and embeds
A public calendar can be embedded in a website, with a WordPress plugin and a Wix widget. On Organization, a calendar channel is listed in GroupCal's search and takes unlimited followers.
Linked calendars
On the Organization plan, calendars can be linked so events sync across them, which lets a master calendar reflect several related schedules.

Teamup

Sub-calendars and folders
A master calendar is split into color-coded sub-calendars that can be grouped into folders, and one event can be assigned to several sub-calendars.
12 calendar views
The same events can be shown in 12 views, among them Timeline, Scheduler, Table and Year, alongside the usual day, week and month layouts.
Nine permission levels
The calendar administrator sets one of 9 access levels for each user or group, and event details can be hidden from read-only users.
Sharing without accounts
A calendar can be shared through links that need no user account, and any single event can be published as a stand-alone web page.
Custom event fields
Events can carry custom text, choice and number fields: 1 on Free and Plus, up to 10 on Pro, 20 on Business and 50 on Enterprise.
iCalendar feeds and API
Inbound .ics feeds pull in other calendars, refreshed every 12 hours on Free and every 5 minutes on Enterprise. An API is documented for developers.
