Who each one suits

OpenTodoList

  • People who want tasks and notes kept as files they control
  • Nextcloud and ownCloud users on both phone and desktop
  • Shopping lists, household tasks and recipes in one app

Planify

  • Linux users who want a native GTK task manager
  • Todoist or Nextcloud users who want a desktop client on Linux
  • Keeping tasks on the local disk with no account
  • Scripting task capture and backups from the terminal

Worth knowing

OpenTodoList

  • There is no hosted sync service: using a library on several devices needs a Nextcloud, ownCloud, WebDAV or Dropbox account, or an outside sync tool.
  • No web version is listed; it runs as an installed app on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows.
  • The AI integration currently covers recipe import only, and an online provider needs the user's own API key, which may carry separate costs.

Planify

  • Linux only: it is distributed on Flathub or built from source, with no Windows, macOS, web or mobile version.
  • It has no sync service of its own, so reaching tasks on a phone means using the Todoist or Nextcloud apps.
  • Planify is not created by, affiliated with or supported by Doist, the company behind Todoist.
  • Development is funded by donations; the site lists Patreon, PayPal, Liberapay and Ko-fi.

Key features

OpenTodoList

Libraries
A library is a container for todo lists, notes, images and recipes, so related items stay together. Each library can be given its own color.
Todo lists, todos and tasks
A todo list holds todos, and each todo can be broken into tasks. Items can have due dates and recurrence, and a schedule view shows what is due across all libraries.
Notes with pages
A note is a text container that can take additional pages, which turns it into a small notebook. Images are separate items with a title and description.
File-based storage
Each library is a normal directory of files on disk, so it can be backed up, inspected, or synced with an outside tool the user already trusts.
Sync through your own storage
Libraries sync through Nextcloud, ownCloud, generic WebDAV servers or Dropbox. Sync is chosen per library, and a local library is never copied to a server.
Recipes with optional AI import
Recipes hold ingredients, steps, notes and yield. An optional AI action turns pasted text or a web page into a recipe, using Apple's on-device model or an OpenAI-compatible provider.

Planify

Todoist, Nextcloud and CalDAV sync
Syncs with a Todoist account or with Nextcloud and CalDAV servers such as Radicale and Baïkal, with several accounts at once. Nextcloud Deck boards sync two-way as projects.
Projects, sections, labels and filters
Tasks are grouped into projects and sub-projects with sections, labels, priorities and custom filters, and each project shows a progress indicator.
Board view and calendar
A project can be shown as a board for visual planning, and calendar integration displays scheduled events next to tasks.
Quick Add with natural-language dates
A global keyboard shortcut opens Quick Add, which parses dates written in English or Spanish and uses @ for labels, # for projects and ! for priorities.
Reminders, recurrence and attachments
A task can carry several reminders, a recurrence pattern, file attachments and links, with Markdown allowed in its title and description.
Command-line interface
The bundled CLI adds, lists and updates tasks and exports a JSON backup. Every command returns JSON, so it can be piped into scripts.
