Who each one suits

MinimaList

  • iPhone users who want a pared-back list with reminders
  • People who like a Pomodoro timer next to their tasks
  • Sharing a grocery list with someone else who uses an iPhone

ToDo: Simple ToDo List

  • People who want one plain checklist and nothing more
  • Anyone avoiding ads, accounts and in-app purchases
  • Users who prefer an app that declares it collects no data

Worth knowing

MinimaList

  • Apple only: iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch, plus Macs with an M1 chip or later, where it runs as the iPad app. No Android, Windows or web version is listed.
  • The listing's description quotes Premium at $0.99 a month or $5.99 a year, but its in-app purchase list shows Pay Monthly at $2.99 and several lifetime options.
  • Neither the vendor's site nor the App Store listing says which features are free and which need Premium.
  • A link to a shared list must be opened in Safari, according to the App Store listing.

ToDo: Simple ToDo List

  • The developer's feature list covers a single ToDo list and a Done list; it mentions no due dates, reminders, subtasks or sharing.
  • No sync or account is described: moving data between devices relies on the manual ZIP backup and restore, and restoring overwrites existing data.
  • It is for phones and tablets: the store listings cover iPhone, iPad and Android, with no Mac, Windows or web version.
  • The App Store listing gives English and Japanese as the only languages.

Key features

MinimaList

Colored lists and custom themes
Separate lists serve different purposes and can be color-coded. The background, font style and size, and notification sounds can all be changed.
Reminders
Reminders can be based on a time or a location and can repeat. A reminder can be set to snooze itself automatically up to three times.
Smart input
A time written inside a task phrase is detected automatically and set as the task's reminder. Tasks also take a memo and sub-tasks.
Focus Timer
A built-in timer offers Pomodoro, countdown and count-up modes with sound effects.
Widgets and Siri
Home Screen and Lock Screen widgets show lists, tasks can be created and completed from the Today widget, and Siri can add a reminder to MinimaList.
Sync, sharing and calendar
Lists sync across iPhone, iPad and Mac, a list can be shared with other people through a link, and tasks can sync with Apple Calendar.

ToDo: Simple ToDo List

Separate ToDo and Done lists
Open items and completed items are kept in separate ToDo and Done lists, and a trash button at the top of the Done list deletes every completed item at once.
Add, edit and reorder
Items are added with the plus button and edited or deleted from a menu icon beside each one. A long press reorders the list, and reordering can be switched off.
Search
A search function, added in version 2.1.1 according to the App Store version history, finds items in the list.
List behavior settings
Settings choose what a tap on an item does (check, edit or nothing), whether new items are added at the top or bottom of the list, and whether checkboxes are used at all.
Backup and restore
Version 4.0 added a backup that writes the data to a ZIP file you can share to other apps or services, and a restore that replaces the current data from such a file.
Dark mode and theme colors
The appearance can be changed with a dark mode and a choice of theme colors, on a layout the developer says is based on Material Design.
