Worth knowing
Cfait
- There is no iOS app or web version: the README lists Linux, FreeBSD, Windows, macOS and Android.
- The macOS binaries are built and hosted by a contributor on a separate site, not on the project's releases page.
- Syncing between devices needs a CalDAV server that the user hosts or signs up for; Cfait runs no sync service of its own.
- Help is built into the apps; the README points to in-app guides, a commented config file and SPECS.md in place of a manual.
Tasks.org
- There is no iPhone or web app. Apple devices reach Tasks.org lists through Apple Reminders over CalDAV.
- The desktop apps are labeled alpha and need a subscription, and the maker says matching the Android app's features will take a while.
- Tasks.org Cloud sync needs the $2.99 a month or $29.99 a year subscription; the name-your-price tier does not include it.
- On Google Play installs, custom themes and icons and sync through DAVx⁵, CalDAV or EteSync all need a subscription.
Key features
Cfait
- One-line task syntax
- Typing a line such as "Buy green tea @tomorrow !1" sets the due date and priority. Other markers set start dates, estimated durations, recurrence and locations.
- Terminal, desktop and Android apps
- A terminal interface, a graphical desktop app and a native Android app with home-screen widgets share one Rust core and the same task data.
- Offline-first with CalDAV sync
- The default Local collection needs no server. To sync devices, Cfait connects to standard CalDAV servers; the README names Nextcloud, Radicale and Baikal.
- Sub-tasks, dependencies and tags
- Tasks form parent and child trees, one task can block another, and hierarchical tags such as #work:backend can be combined into reusable aliases.
- Time tracking and goals
- A task can be started and paused to record time spent, given an estimated duration, or tied to a recurring habit goal such as five times a year.
- Daily notes and wiki pages
- A date-anchored journal and wiki pages linked with double square brackets sit beside the tasks and sync as CalDAV VJOURNAL entries.
Tasks.org
- Offline lists with deep subtasks
- Tasks, lists, tags and reminders are unlimited and need no account or internet connection. Filters, manual sorting and subtasks nested to any depth are included.
- Recurring tasks and location reminders
- Tasks can repeat and send notifications, and reminders can be tied to a location. Both are part of the free Android app.
- Sync with services you already use
- Google Tasks and Microsoft To Do connect for free. Sync through DAVx⁵, a CalDAV server, EteSync or DecSync CC needs an in-app subscription.
- Tasks.org Cloud
- The maker's CalDAV-based sync service adds list sharing with up to five guests, an email-to-task inbox and app passwords for clients such as Apple Reminders.
- Desktop apps in alpha
- Early-access apps for macOS, Windows and Linux sync with Tasks.org Cloud, Google Tasks, CalDAV and EteSync. One subscription unlocks both Android and desktop.
- Open source without ads
- The Android and desktop apps are licensed under the GNU GPLv3 and show no ads. Installs from F-Droid unlock in-app features without a subscription.
