Who each one suits

Do.List

  • People who prioritize by day instead of setting due dates
  • Keeping grocery, packing and reading lists beside to-dos
  • iPhone users who want a free to-do app without ads

TeuxDeux

  • People who want a to-do list that works like a paper planner
  • Planning day by day without alerts or notifications
  • Phone-only users, since the iOS and Android apps are free

Worth knowing

Do.List

  • It runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only; the vendor's FAQ says there is no Android version yet.
  • Due dates are confined to one list by design, so tasks in Today, Tomorrow and Later cannot be scheduled to a date and time.
  • The App Store marks it as designed for iPad and not verified for macOS, and no web or Windows version is offered.
  • The vendor's FAQ still says use on multiple devices is not supported, while the App Store listing describes iPhone and iPad syncing through iCloud.

TeuxDeux

  • The web app needs a subscription after the 7-day trial; without one the website reverts to read-only.
  • To-dos have no alerts or reminders by design; the only notification is the optional Daily Digest email.
  • An internet connection is required to use TeuxDeux.
  • Shared lists are read-only for viewers, and the App Store listing is for iPhone only.

Key features

Do.List

Today, Tomorrow and Later lists
Tasks are prioritized into three lists in place of dated deadlines, reordered by drag and drop, and the app always opens on Today.
Life Lists
More than 30 ready-made lists hold non-urgent items such as groceries, gift ideas, trip packing, movies to see and bucket lists, and custom lists can be added.
List types that behave differently
Grocery and packing lists are checked off, books and movies can be marked as favorites that rise to the top, and the Daily list resets so its tasks can be repeated.
Grocery list with stores and sections
Grocery items can be given a store and a section, and the list can then be sorted by either one.
Reminders for dated tasks
A task that does need a due date goes into a dedicated list that sorts by date and sends a reminder; the other lists stay free of dates.
iCloud sync, backup and Apple Watch
Data is saved on the device, synced between iPhone and iPad through iCloud and backed up from Settings. The Apple Watch app shows the lists and completes tasks.

TeuxDeux

A list for every day
To-dos are written on the list for a calendar day and reordered by drag and drop, in a layout meant to feel like a paper to-do list.
Automatic rollover
To-dos that are not finished today move to tomorrow's list on their own, so nothing has to be rescheduled by hand.
Recurring to-dos in plain words
Adding a phrase such as "every weekday" or "every other week" to the end of a to-do makes it repeat. Recurring to-dos can also be edited and sorted from a sidebar.
Someday lists
Undated lists for goals and bucket lists sit below the daily lists and are grouped in tabs. A someday list can be shared through a link, read-only.
Focus mode
A single-column view that shows only the current day's list, with a choice of backgrounds and a timer for a work session.
Daily Digest email
An optional email with the day's to-dos, sent at a time you choose. Replying to the email adds to-dos to that day's list.
