Microsoft To Do

Worth knowing
Do.List
- It runs on iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch only; the vendor's FAQ says there is no Android version yet.
- Due dates are confined to one list by design, so tasks in Today, Tomorrow and Later cannot be scheduled to a date and time.
- The App Store marks it as designed for iPad and not verified for macOS, and no web or Windows version is offered.
- The vendor's FAQ still says use on multiple devices is not supported, while the App Store listing describes iPhone and iPad syncing through iCloud.
Microsoft To Do
- Signing in requires a personal Microsoft account or a work or school account.
- Lists can be shared only between personal Microsoft accounts or between accounts in the same workplace or school.
- No Linux app is listed; the vendor names Windows, Mac, iOS, Android and the web.
Key features
Do.List
- Today, Tomorrow and Later lists
- Tasks are prioritized into three lists in place of dated deadlines, reordered by drag and drop, and the app always opens on Today.
- Life Lists
- More than 30 ready-made lists hold non-urgent items such as groceries, gift ideas, trip packing, movies to see and bucket lists, and custom lists can be added.
- List types that behave differently
- Grocery and packing lists are checked off, books and movies can be marked as favorites that rise to the top, and the Daily list resets so its tasks can be repeated.
- Grocery list with stores and sections
- Grocery items can be given a store and a section, and the list can then be sorted by either one.
- Reminders for dated tasks
- A task that does need a due date goes into a dedicated list that sorts by date and sends a reminder; the other lists stay free of dates.
- iCloud sync, backup and Apple Watch
- Data is saved on the device, synced between iPhone and iPad through iCloud and backed up from Settings. The Apple Watch app shows the lists and completes tasks.
Microsoft To Do
- My Day
- A daily list that resets every night. Tasks left unfinished go back to the Tasks list and appear among the next day's suggestions.
- Lists, steps and notes
- Tasks sit in lists and can have due dates, reminders, notes, a breakdown into steps and up to 25MB of attached files.
- Shared lists
- A list is shared by sending an invitation link, and it stays in sync as members make changes. Access can later be limited to current members or switched off.
- Outlook and Planner
- Tasks are stored in Exchange Online, so they show up in both To Do and Outlook Tasks. Flagged email can be handled as tasks, and Planner tasks can be seen in To Do.
- Sync across devices
- Signing in with the same account on each device keeps lists in step; the vendor says the app updates every 5 seconds.
- Tasks API
- Microsoft points developers to the public Outlook Tasks REST API for reading and updating the tasks that To Do stores.
